Avengers, The - The Best of the Original Avengers (DVD, 2001, 2-Disc Set)

If you only ever wanted just one original Avengers DVD at a very modest price. This without doubt is the one to buy. It will give you a quick overview of the three original actreses. Honor Blackman, Linda Thorson and Diana Rigg. Most prefer Diana Rigg playing Emma Peel as their favorite. From there you can expand your collection to include others from your favorite era. Some excellent box sets are also available quite reasonable priced. Don't however forget about the New Avengers series made in the mid 1970s. These are also quite good and well worth buying. If Diana Rigg is the ultimate Avengers girl, then Joanna Lumley and Linda Thorson are equal runners up in second place in my opinion. There is nothing wrong with Honor Blackman. It's just it was early 1960s England, and the lighting and cinimatography wern't up to the later standards. All Avengers and New Avengers are good. It's just some are better than others.

I had grown a little nostalgic of tv from my youth,and had a yen to see Diana Rigg as Mrs Emma Peel from the Avengers. Best of the Avengers hit the spot and enjoyed the DVD completely, not just the Diana Rigg episodes. I also ordered the bonus disc of the Avengers, the comlete Emma Peel collector's edition and found it very disapointing.

For those of us who adored this zany British dapper, cool and often totally and wonderfully silly TV series spoof of the James Bond classics, you will LOVE this one! It features episodes personally picked-out as exemplary by John Steed (played by Patrick MacKnee himself...Look for the young MacKnee as the Young Scrooge in the Alistair Sim 1950's movie version of "A Christmas Carol")...

MacKnee's favorite episodes feature ones which were shown in Great Britain BEFORE the series became a hit in the US, starring Honor Blackmun (of the James Bond movie "Goldfinger" Fame)...This is a very rear treat.

Also included are all of Steed's female spy patriots extraordinaire, including Dame Diana Rigg, as the catsuited, man-throwing Mrs. Emma Peel who is as dapper a female counterpart to the male Steed as any could ever get. And there are Tara King episodes as well, who played a slightly more ditzy, but great fighting female sidekick to the older and wiser Mr. Steed.

This configuration of Key episodes shows the evolution (and devolution) of The long-running TV series, and is a MUST HAVE for any SERIOUS collector of one of the BEST spy spoof series ever produced on either side of The Pond...It makes "Get Smart" really pale in comparison.

Like dry sherry, the series may be an acquired taste, but this tape shows it all in microcosm. And, it ages Quite Well...

Well worth the viewing!!!

This is a great snapshot of an old favorite TV series I haven't seen in years. Emma Peel and Tara King main characters are magnificent as are Steed and other supporting actors. Tara King episodes are the only ones in color though and the Cathy Gale episodes were not my style; otherwise it's an excellent sampling of a very fine series.

This is a GREAT old britsh show that is timeless.
I would recomend this set of DVD's to EVERYONE who enjoys action and drama
in it natual form. (not sci-fi).

A must see set of Avengers shows.
