Album Notes
Music and lyrics written by Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx.Principal cast includes: Jennifer Barnhart, Natalie Venetia Belcon, Stephanie D'Abruzzo, Jordon Gelber, Ann Harada, Rick Lyon, John Tartaglia.Recorded at Right Track Studio, New York, New York on August 10, 2003.In the late 1990s, the television show SOUTH PARK sparked a trend of using figures associated with children's entertainment, such as puppets and animated characters, in the service of adult comedy. Depending on your viewpoint, this either generates marvelously clever social critique or cheap, tasteless jokes. Adding to the controversy is AVENUE Q, the smash Broadway hit that reads like a thinly veiled SESAME STREET parody, in which a charming puppet world is subverted by smart, bawdy humor about sexuality, pornography, and racism. In this production, for example, puppet roommates Rod and Nicky seem to have a particularly close relationship (explored in "If You Were Gay") and other characters wonder "What Do You Do with a B.A. in English?" and declare "It Sucks to Be Me" in a rousing medley. The original Broadway cast recording features these songs and more, and it is no wonder AVENUE Q won the Tony for Best Musical given its catchy tunes, witty lyrics, and spirited performances. One listen to the score and you, too, may find yourself singing "Everyone's a Little Bit Racist" and "The Internet Is for Porn."

Sesame Street + Rent = Hilarious Contemporary Musical

Created: 03/10/05
Ok, I admit, I have a thing for musicals... but not the 'Phantom of the Opera' or 'Les Miz' variety. I'm a bigger fan of the more contemporary stuff that isn't so wishy-washy and Oklahoma-esque. That said, Avenue Q is certainly one of my new favorites because it spins real life lessons in a way we all grew up with...

Racism, post-college job prospects, internet porn... these topics are all told through sesame street-like songs that you'll grow to love.

But you don't have to take my word for it.

I bought this as a christmas present for my girlfriendas a christmas present. She absolutely loved it. Avenue Q's songs are a hilarious parody of Sesame Street, including such songs as "If you were gay" and "The internet is for porn". This album is a must for the adult musical lover and is all the funnier if you happened to watch sesame street as a kid.

Bringing Back Memories of Broadway

If you haven't seen "Avenue Q", you may not understand the lyrics to most of the songs on this album. The play is very sexually charged and is definitely not songs from "Sesame Street". But if you've seen the play, you'll enjoy the music and it will make you laugh all over again.

Witty and fun songs and very special for me, as we are getting Avenue Q this summer at our theatre. I have heard a number of the songs in concert before, and it is so refreshing to hear the cast recording.

I never made it to NYC to see the real thing, but in a way, having this CD is even better. I can listen to the Original Broadway Cast anytime - mostly in my car or office - anytime I need a smile (especially those days when "It Sucks to be Me").
