Synopsis
Kate Chopin's novel is a probing psychological study of a woman who, oppressed by family life and her romantic difficulties, drowns herself in the ocean. It is also an examination of a particular culture at the end of the 19th century: the aristocratic society of southern Louisiana. Condemned at the time it was written, THE AWAKENING has been valued in later years for its unflinching honesty and sexual frankness.

Publisher's Note
First published in 1899, this novel shocked readers with its open sensuality and uninhibited treatment of marital infidelity. The poignant, lyrical story of a New Orleans wife who attempts to find love outside a stifling marriage, critics have praised it as  a forerunner of the modern novel. New introductory Note.

In the summer of her 28th year, Edna Pontellier and her children, along with the wives and families of other prospective businessmen, spend the summer in an idyllic coastal community away from their husbands and the sweltering heat of 1890s' New Orleans. Aware of deep yearnings that are unfulfilled by marriage and motherhood, Edna plunges into an illicit liaison that reawakens her long dormant desires, inflames her heart, and eventually blinds her to all else.

Industry Reviews
"Denounced at the time of its original publication in 1899, and out of print for decades, 'The Awakening' is an American masterpiece: the brilliantly conceived story of a woman's 'awakening' to erotic love, and to her predicament in a patriarchal society."
(unknown) - Joyce Carol Oates

"A Creole Bovery is this little novel of Miss Chopin's."
(unknown) - Willa Cather

"'The Awakening' seems to me to be the finest novel of its sort written by an American, and to rank among the world's masterpieces of short fiction."
Georgia Review - Robert Cantwell

"It was not necessary for a writer of so great refinement and poetic grace to enter the over-worked world of sex-fiction...This is not a pleasant story."
Chicago Times-Herald (1895-1918) (01/01/1899)

"A Creole 'Bovary' is this little novel...and I shall not attempt to say why Miss Chopin has devoted so exquisite and sensitive, well-governed a style to so trite and sordid a theme."
Leader - Willa Cather (07/08/1899)

"It is uncanny, nothing else...a masterpiece."
New York Times - Linda Wolfe

book review

While in high school, I had no idea to write for my English research paper. My teacher suggested to me to read this book. As a sixteen year old high school student, I really enjoyed it. However, ten years later, something is different. I have been wanting to reread this book for years. I think my anticipation built it up more than it actually was. I really don't know why things are different. But, I didn't enjoy it the same. I only finished it because I started it. Fortunately, since it is such a short book, I didn't take a lot of time reading. I almost wish I had not read it again, now I have to find another favorite book...

This was written in the 1800s by a woman who used her real name! not just initials like many did and she has such a talent! Saw it mentioned on the HBO show Treme, had to have a copy. The book after I read it went to a female friend to be passed on. Great scenes, descriptions.

I bought this book for a paper I had to write in my womens history class. I am not much of a reader but surprisingly I actually enjoyed the book. I could not seem to put it down. From beginning to end I loved it. Its a short novel and i was able to read it in two days. Highly recommended to anyone who is thinking about reading it.

I love the fact that it is so eco-friendly, affordable and that it is available in many other books. I feel that this is a great way to sell literature books.
