Publisher's Note
A lavishly illustrated revision of a top-selling primer invites readers to develop healthier, more environmentally friendly, and self-sufficient living skills that are less reliant on technology, in a resource that shares step-by-step instructions for such capabilities as raising chickens, making cheese, and building a log cabin.

Although not focusing specifically on sustainability, Gehring (a freelance writer/editor who lives on the U.S. east coast) embraces a lifestyle valued by previous generations and current "green" living advocates. Offering down-to-earth advice on building a shelter, meeting energy needs, raising and preserving food, creating home crafts, remedies, and recreation, this update of the 1997 and 1981 editions features color photos, illustrations, and resources. You know, if you've ever thought something like "If society ever fell, and I could only have one book..." then this is the book for you. It has comprehensive instructions for, well, just about everything a person needs to be able to survive in your average North American environment. Even if you just use it for some basic gardening tips, its worth it. Absolutely one of the best books I've ever had.
