Barbershop (DVD, 2003, Special Edition)

Tim Story, Ice Cube, Cedric the Entertainer|Theatrical release: 2002 | Rating: PG-13 (MPAA)

Movie synopsis

Tim Story's BARBERSHOP is a lighthearted, crowd-pleasing romp that takes place over the course of one day in and around a south side Chicago barbershop. The owner of the struggling establishment, Calvin (Ice Cube), presides over his raucous staff like his father and grandfather did before him. There's the aging, politically incorrect Eddie (a show-stealing Cedric the Entertainer), the pretentious Jimmy (Sean Patrick Thomas), the ex-con Ricky (Michael Ealy), the fiery Terri (Eve), the white, unappreciated Isaac (Troy Garity), and the poetry-loving Dinka (Leonard Earl Howze). As the local police search for the criminals who stole an ATM from the deli across the street (the hysterically pathetic Anthony Anderson and Lahmard Tate), Calvin contemplates selling the barbershop to a menacing loan shark (Keith David). When it appears that a deal has been made, Calvin realizes the error of his ways and tries to rectify the situation before it's too late. With BARBERSHOP, Ice Cube is well on his way to establishing another cinematic franchise (following in the steps of the FRIDAY series). Using the universally identifiable backdrop of a barbershop, the film bounces between drama and action and comedy with easy assurance. If ever there was a film that deserved a sequel, this is it.

Family 'hood movie

Ice Cube is proving to be a talented movie actor, director, producer, whatever, whatever! Here he plays it straight allowing for this ensemble to pull of the bigger stunts. I have to admit it, Anthony Anderson and Lamar Tate's subplot of a stolen ATM is actually the funniest thing here. Overall fans of 'FRiday' will find 'Barbershop' at tad slow, sappy and without nearly the same replay value. But Cedric the Entertainer's turn as a cranky ol' barber is enough glue to keep this picture together and how could you hate on anything shot on the 'south side of Chicago'.

Ice Cube's 2nd Funniest Movie

Created: 16/05/08
This is another movie directed and produced by Ice Cube who became known for the super funny "Friday" movie. Cedric the entertainer made me laugh almost every time he spoke. There are a ton of famous faces here including Anthony Anderson, Eve, Sean Patrick Thomas, Cedric the Entertainer and of course Ice Cube.

Great movie to watch for some good laughs.

I never get tired of this movie. I laugh my ass off every time I watch it. What a great cast. We all gained when Ice Cube decided to go in to acting. And Cedric, well what can you say except Great!!! All the cast made this movie work. The casting director should have gotten an academy award. I wish the sequel would have been near as good.

I love it because it finally shows that the meeting place at the the small family barbershop is more than just one ,but he can't see it for awhile because he thinks ,just give up and let the big barbershop business take over but thankfuly by the end he realizes that the barbershop he has is more than a shop but a part of a wonderful family community ,a place all can meet,a place all want to remain .Its a terrific story.

Barbershop

This first of series of (arguably) 3 films has a simple appeal. A day in the life, about 24 hours. No special effects or CGI, no fancy camera angles, just raw low-budget writing. I apprecite its rough edges, especially compare to the next 2 in the franchise. Surely not realistic, but looks like they had fun making the film.
It's on my list of favorites and decided to buy the DVD version to update my video library.
