    Album Notes
Barenaked Ladies: Ed Robertson (vocals, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, bass guitar); Steven Page (vocals, acoustic guitar, electric guitar); Jim Creeggan (vocals, electric guitar, double bass, bass guitar); Kevin Hearn (vocals, mandolin, accordion, piano, keyboards, vibraphone); Tyler Stewart (vocals, drums, percussion).Additional personnel: Michael Bublé, Sarah McLachlan (vocals). When one considers the ancient holy traditions embodied in Christmas and Hanukkah, the words "wacky," "zany," and "irreverent" are not usually terms that come to mind. These appellations are, however, regularly applied to Canadian acoustic rockers Barenaked Ladies. Strangely enough, on BARENAKED FOR THE HOLIDAYS, this unlikely combination of band and subject matter works splendidly, bringing a heaping helping of joy to the most celebratory of seasons. The North-of-the-border boys' stunningly eclectic musicianship allows them to employ numerous musical toys on Santa's list, including the Lowery organ (complete with its wonderfully cheesy internal drum-machine sounds) that graces "O Holy Night," and the barbershop-quartet-style vocals on "Deck the Stills" (which consists solely of the lyrics "Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young" sung to the tune of "Deck the Halls"). Lest the whole affair get too silly, there are several heartfelt moments as well. "Snowman" actually makes one feel sorry for the frozen narrator's transient existence, while the folksy "Hanukkah Blessings" is a straightforward reminder of the holiday's true meaning.

    Put this is Somebody's Stocking

    Created: 30/12/05
The Ladies are always right on the money and this is no exception. It is a far cry from their appeance on an Ann Murray Christmas special years ago. They do a lot of standard Christmas songs and carols. They even toss in a couple of Hanukkah tunes. The musicianship is tight as usual; Steven's vocals are amazing.

One of the true gems on this CD is "Elf's Lament". It talks about the problems of being an elf in Sanata's workshop and would a great anthem for a union organizing effort at the North Pole.

While the CD is terrific, even better is to see BNL's Christmas show. They do about 70 percent of their regualr stuff and 30 percent Christmas tunes. When I saw them, their opening band was The LeeVees, who did all Hanukkah stuff ... very funny.

While Steven could sing a grocery list and sound amazing, he did a version of "Silent Night" that is nothing shy of operetic.

Buy this CD, toss back a couple egg nogs and wait for the fat man to slip down the chimney. It's well worth it.

    Alternative Holiday Mix!

    Created: 29/11/09
I first heard Track #10 God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen/We Three Kings (with Sarah McLachlan). I wondered who was singing at first, then heard Sarah M. I had to find out where the song came from. I then bought the CD on eBay.
I have since listened to it a few times. I had never listened to Bare Naked Ladies before, but I really enjoy their voices! I really like the mixture this CD brings!

I still especially like God Rest Ye...!

    Happy, and funny, Holidays

I bought this because I like most of the music from the Barenaked Ladies. But when I heard the samples of the music from the CD, I was sold. My favorite tracks are Elf's Lament, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, Standing in the Snow, and Green Christmas. If you like off the wall Christmas carols, this is a great CD.

not their best album but ok

    Created: 21/11/10
I really wanted to like this as I do like almost all of their albums.

Some of the songs, like "jingle bells" are truly awful. Others are more upbeat. There is a nice mix of christmas and Hunakah songs.

Overall this is nowhere near as good as their regular albums. It sounds like their hearts were not into making this one. Or possibly some of them were drunk or under the influence of something while making it.

I can't complain though since I got it for such a great price. Even one or two good songs makes it worth it.

I love the Barenaked Ladies. This cd is the coolest Christmas music. Love the way the guys put their own spin on old standers. I like the new things that they do too, even mixing the hannuka songs in with christmas music was such a wonderful way of bring the two holidays together. I can't wait to see what they do next.
