Bead Embroidery by Yokiko Ogura

Created: 28/05/08
For the novice in bead embroidery, this book is an excellent practice and reference source. The explanations begin with the most basic techniques that might be unfamiliar to the most inexperienced needleworker. For those with needlework experience, these directions are easy to skip over and get right to specific stitches and their application. Techniques are divided into categories such as line stitches, detached stitches, geometric stitches, and so on. Each group of stitches is accompanied by directions for a sampler, using all the stitches in that category, which results by the end of the book in several lovely finished pieces, suitable for framing.
The only negative aspect of the patterns is the author's use of a specific brand of beads which proves to be difficult to locate, even through dealers that carry that particular brand. The reference numbers, which appear to specify particular colors, are apparently not used universally by retailers. However, the illustrations and explanations far outweigh this one disadvantage.
I have read several bead embroidery books. If I had to choose only one for my personal library, this is the one definitive book I would pick.
