Movie synopsis

With a title that insures against accusations of false advertising, BEERFEST is a raunchy and genial amalgamation of ANIMAL HOUSE, STRANGE BREW, FIGHT CLUB, and every clichéd sports film ever made. Written by and starring comedy troupe Broken Lizard (SUPER TROOPERS, CLUB DREAD) and directed by Lizard member Jay Chandrasekhar, the film is unapologetically sophomoric, never missing a chance for a belch, flatulence, bared breasts, or Cloris Leachman doing lewd things with a sausage. After the death of their bar-owning German grandfather (Donald Sutherland), Jan (Paul Soter) and Todd (Erik Stolhanske) Wolfhouse must travel to Munich to scatter his ashes. Fortunately for them, it's Oktoberfest, but the brothers aren't there very long before they embarrass themselves at a public celebration and find themselves at Beerfest, an annual international underground beer-guzzling competition. When they compete, they are disgraced by their German cousins, the Von Wolfhausens--headed by father Jurgen Prochnow--who claim that the Wolfhouses' late grandfather stole a beer recipe from them many years before. Jan and Todd return home to train for next year's competition, incorporating into their team a few old college pals--male prostitute Barry (Chandrasekhar), burly Landfill (Kevin Heffernan), and science nerd Fink (Steve Lemme). For BEERFEST to work, it's imperative that viewers find humor in exaggerated German accents. Cloris Leachman appears to be enjoying throwing all comic caution to the wind, and Prochnow gets to lampoon DAS BOOT in a funny sequence. Big, sloppy, and ridiculous--compliments in this case--all apply to the third Broken Lizard feature, which is sure to burp its way into every fraternity house film library until the world ends.

Get over it, junior Eberts!

actually had two German weissbeers while watching this movie and had a really, really good time watching this movie.

Its infantile, incorrect, immature, ridiculous and how I loved it. I will not give a synopsis of the movie as it really doesn't matter what the story is about. What matters is, that the movie focuses on some of the aspects of living that we think of as teenage-like and embarrassing but still some of us (including me) still have a soft spot for:

Drinking beer and while doing that ending up in all kinds of weird situations.

Drinking beer and getting wasted.

Drinking beer and having the worst of hangovers that you could possible imagine.

Drinking beer and doing things that you so much regret when you sober up.

Nudity, lots of nudity.

I think that one of the reasons that a movie like this emerges is, that in this day and age we are so much expected to behave in a rational, controlled way and never stop thinking about our career and responsibility that the other side of our personality that contains the "letting go" and not caring about anything but having a good time is hidden away in the dark (again I am talking about myself).

I really don't think that any girl would be able to understand the humor in this movie unless they are Australian or English.

This is not a great movie but it worked for me because I could recognize my own darker sides so many times in this film - and because I could it made me believe that other guys have them too.

While not as good as Super Troopers it does redeem the guys of Broken Lizard from some of the bad juju from Club Dread.

Beerfest - It's so bad, it's good!

Created: 11/04/07
Beerfest is an off the wall comedy that I wasn't prepared to watch. My expectations were quite low, and I simply was not dissappointed. At times quite painful to watch, the script feels like it was written by first year college film students who so happen to have a very large budget to play with.

I personally enjoyed the film because I wasn't expecting much. Another friend simply thought it was the worst movie she'd seen in a long time, ranking up with with Hot Pursuit and other 80's hyper-bad cinema.

Thus, while not a film for all, if you're not expecting much, I think you'll really enjoy the movie. To sum up ... it's so bad, it's good!
