Beerfest (DVD, 2006, Unrated Edition, Widescreen Edition)

Jay Chandrasekhar, Erik Stolhanske, Paul Soter|Theatrical release: 2006 | Rating: Unrated

Movie synopsis

With a title that insures against accusations of false advertising, BEERFEST is a raunchy and genial amalgamation of ANIMAL HOUSE, STRANGE BREW, FIGHT CLUB, and every clichéd sports film ever made. Written by and starring comedy troupe Broken Lizard (SUPER TROOPERS, CLUB DREAD) and directed by Lizard member Jay Chandrasekhar, the film is unapologetically sophomoric, never missing a chance for a belch, flatulence, bared breasts, or Cloris Leachman doing lewd things with a sausage. After the death of their bar-owning German grandfather (Donald Sutherland), Jan (Paul Soter) and Todd (Erik Stolhanske) Wolfhouse must travel to Munich to scatter his ashes. Fortunately for them, it's Oktoberfest, but the brothers aren't there very long before they embarrass themselves at a public celebration and find themselves at Beerfest, an annual international underground beer-guzzling competition. When they compete, they are disgraced by their German cousins, the Von Wolfhausens--headed by father Jurgen Prochnow--who claim that the Wolfhouses' late grandfather stole a beer recipe from them many years before. Jan and Todd return home to train for next year's competition, incorporating into their team a few old college pals--male prostitute Barry (Chandrasekhar), burly Landfill (Kevin Heffernan), and science nerd Fink (Steve Lemme). For BEERFEST to work, it's imperative that viewers find humor in exaggerated German accents. Cloris Leachman appears to be enjoying throwing all comic caution to the wind, and Prochnow gets to lampoon DAS BOOT in a funny sequence. Big, sloppy, and ridiculous--compliments in this case--all apply to the third Broken Lizard feature, which is sure to burp its way into every fraternity house film library until the world ends.

Drink On !!!! A Hilarious Adventure !!!!

Created: 23/12/06
"Beerfest" is exactly what it sounds like. A film that is jammed-packed with "No-Holds-Barred" BEER drinking obscenity and outrageously hilarious scenarios. Broken Lizard has once again brought outlandish humor and hilarious material to film. I have to honestly say; that "Beerfest" is, (I believe), the funniest film by Broken Lizard, to date. - At face value, this movie appears to be a "Guy-Film", and it most clearly is.... BUT I have to admit that most women I know have thoroughly enjoyed this film. So don't hesitate to partake in this romp! - Packed with the "Girls Gone Wild" attitude and plenty of "Bathroom Humor", (as we'd describe it), Burps, and plenty of BEER, the worldwind adventure begins !!!! -- Upon the death of their grandfather, two family members, (Age: Mid 30's), travel to Germany to bury their relative at his last dying wish, "Octoberfest's Underground Beer Drinking Competition -- BEERFEST". (From Quarters, To Beer-Pong, To Beer-Drinking Card Games.. BEERFEST has it all.) The two find Beerfest..and are absolutely humiliated in competition by European Countries Teams., with to their shock No USA Team!!?? -- They return to America as beaten men to their family run Bar "SchnitsEnGiggles", where they carefully devise a plan to recruit and train a USA Team for these Underground Beer Olympics next years competition. They recruit their friend "Landfill", an overweight Beer Champion who just finished serving time for a hostage-standoff with Police after being fired from the local brewery, for drinking 45 beers off the manufacture-line that day. They recruit their scientific genius friend who works in a lab, collecting frog semen for breeding, and they recruit their lost friend from school who has turned to male prostitution under bridges after a failed Beer-Pong Game Overseas Went Awry!! -- This team of misfits has 11 months left to train as they pledge to win it all., for Grandfather, Grandma, Beer and America!! - With a cockeyed feel of the "Rocky-Training Saga's" the group undergoes chugging after chugging; party-crashing to challenge teen-agers to see how their progress is doing; passing out in outrageous places; late-night eating binges; burps, farts & beergoggling women who seem unbelievably attractive and in the morning turn out to be nightmarishly different from their dreamy appearances. Finally, trained and ready to go; the TEAM USA heads to Germany. Can they win it all? Amidst the beer flying, breast-exposing, girls gone wild atmosphere of BEERFEST? For America Darn It !!!! -- You will absolutely fall in love with these guys and cheer them on in ridiculous fashion all through training and the outlandish competitions in the BEER OLYMPICS!!!! -- This movie is wildly over-the-top., and absolutely not meant for anyone who is steadfastly holding onto conservative politically correct beliefs., but if you ever "let yourself go in the name of crazy fun" during your "drinking" years; and/or partied in college and you remember it fondly., then this movie is your new CULT-HIT CHAMPION !!!! -- Cheer on this Beer-Swilling Bunch and have a blast. Broken Lizard deserves full applaudes for making the movie we can all relate to and cheer on with huge laughs and fond memories., as these loveable losers live out the EVERYMAN'S DREAM !!!! Champions of BEER-DRINKING !!!! See This.... You Will Love The Laughs !!!!

This movie is exactly what I expected it to be. If you've seen Super Troopers or Club Dredd, then you know what you're in for. If you haven't seen any of the Broken Lizard troupe's previous comedies, they are comparable to a National Lampoon offering: juvenile humor, mild T&A, lots of dick and fart jokes.

Beerfest is the story of two young Coloradans of German stock who lose their grandfather, and are asked to go to Oktoberfest in Munich to set his remains in their rightful resting place. They are taken, by a German friend, to Beerfest - a sort of beer drinking olympics held in secret during Oktoberfest. Here they are ridiculed and humiliated by their German relatives, and grandpa's remains are desecrated.

To get revenge, the guys form their own American beer drinking team composed of a hotdog eating contest champion, a male prostitute, and a scientist who spends the bulk of his days "extracting" frog semen. Add in a lot of German women naked from the waist up, a secret recipe for the greatest beer ever invented, and a whole lot of "training" for next year's big event, and you have Beerfest.

In comparison with the other Broken Lizard films, I would say Beerfest is of about the same quality. It has some genuinely funny moments mixed in with a whole lot of mind-numbing stupidity. What really makes Beerfest special are what I like to call the "Man Show Moments," where every guy in the room has to stand up and cheer. It's one of those movies that will always be fun to watch when the guys are hanging out, having a few pints. Moreover, it pays no heed to political correctness, good taste, decorum, or any form of culture whatsoever.

Every guy I know has loved this movie, and so have most of their wives/girlfriends. Just don't take it out when anyone overly uptight or PC is around - it could make for an uncomfortable night of man bashing later. Much of the humor is in bad taste, and if people don't have a sense of humor about these things, they could be offended.

Do you like the other Broken Lizard titles?

Created: 11/09/07
Broken Lizard is very much this generation's National Lampoon's.

With what National Lampoon's gave us; Animal House, Vacation, Broken Lizard is giving us with Super Troopers and now this - Beerfest.

Do you like the sophomoric humor of Super Troopers or Club Dread? Then you're sure to love this movie as well.

Add in Will Forte (SNL alumni), and the blonde guy from 'Not Another Teen Movie' and you have a very impressive comedy squad.

I greatly recommend this movie if you like the above listed, if not, its a definite pass, but for those who love beer, occasional glimpses of the female body nude, crude humor, a decent-to-mediocre plot, great jokes, and a blast of a time, I highly, highly, recommend this movie.

Get over it, junior Eberts!

I actually had two German beers while watching this movie and had a really, really good time watching this movie.

Its infantile, incorrect, immature, ridiculous and how I loved it. I will not give a synopsis of the movie as it really doesn't matter what the story is about. What matters is, that the movie focuses on some of the aspects of living that we think of as teenage-like and embarrassing but still some of us (including me) still have a soft spot for:

Drinking beer and while doing that ending up in all kinds of weird situations.

Drinking beer and getting wasted.

Drinking beer and having the worst of hangovers that you could possible imagine.

Drinking beer and doing things that you so much regret when you sober up.

Nudity, lots of nudity.

I think that one of the reasons that a movie like this emerges is, that in this day and age we are so much expected to behave in a rational, controlled way and never stop thinking about our career and responsibility that the other side of our personality that contains the "letting go" and not caring about anything but having a good time is hidden away in the dark (again I am talking about myself).

I really don't think that any girl would be able to understand the humor in this movie unless they are Australian or English.

This is not a great movie but it worked for me because I could recognize my own darker sides so many times in this film - and because I could it made me believe that other guys have them too.

LOVE Broken lizard

Ok I wasn't crazy about Club Dread (I think that is what is called), but I love Beerfest and Super Troopers. I love the Germans in this movie. Will Forte is hilarious in this...and the 5 guys from Broken Lizard can do no wrong. They are awesome! Even the gratutious booby shot was hilariously overdone. And Cloris Leachman was spectacular...I did not know she had it in her....the acting, not the sausage. This is a great movie that you can laugh at and not have to think through. great kick back movie.
