Album NotesPhotographer: Michael Ochs.THE BEST OF ERIC BURDON AND THE ANIMALS: 1966-1968 is an excellent compilation of hit singles and album tracks from the period after 1966, when the Animals' original lineup began to disintegrate. The songs collected here mark a departure from the basic R&B format and witness the band's earliest excursions in the West Coast psychedelic style. The Animals' latter-day rhythm section also approaches the funky sound that would subsequently define Eric Burdon and War. "Don't Bring Me Down," soulfully sung by Burdon and textured with a fuzzed-out guitar sound, can be found here, alongside the epic "Sky Pilot." The latter continues the Animals' tradition of Vietnam protest songs and is presented here in its full, two-part glory. A very '60s sense of social consciousness certainly informs such offerings, but the Animals' classic tunes don't sound a bit dated. This collection is an essential addition to any well-stocked classic-rock library.
