Album Notes
Liner Note Author: Jon de Mello.Best of Fiji, a greatest-hits compilation of contemporary Hawaiian artist Fiji. On the album is one track from his debut, Evolution, five each from Grattitude and Born & Raised, and three from Transition, along with the stray non-album track "Irresistable Woman." As with much of contemporary Hawaiian music, there's a not-so-careful mix of reggae, synth-driven pop, more traditional elements of Hawaiian music, and basic pop ballads. As such, the songs take quite a few predictable turns, despite being rather well made. There are other contemporary artists that have perhaps made greater contributions to the music (Israel Kamakawiwo'ole being the most obvious in Hawaiian reggae, Hapa in the traditional-contemporary fusion, etc.), but in large part, they don't work across the various subgenres. Fiji does a fine job of bridging the boundaries, and this greatest-hits album is actually pretty well done, collecting the highlights by simply condensing the majority of the filler tracks out of his previous albums. If you're going to buy a Fiji album, this is a good choice. It doesn't break any records for originality, but it's pretty good on all fronts. ~ Adam Greenberg

Good CD, but only if you like polynesian raggae/rap

Created: 05/05/08
I purchased this CD after I heard one of their slower songs playing in a sports shop in Haleiwa, the north shore on the island of Oahu. All songs on this CD are pretty good, if you enjoy the raggae/rap style, which isn't my favorite, but I do really like the voices. My favorite is track number 15, "Ku'u Aloha". I listen to it over and over. The way Fiji sings this song blows me away! I wish this artist would do a CD with more songs like Ku'u Aloha. I would buy it in a heartbeat!

What an incredible CD!!!!

Every song on this disc is excellent! This guy's voice is Marvin Gaye, Billy Ocean, Smokey Robinson, and a hint of Joe Cocker all rolled into one! Yet he has a distinctive sound and style all his own. A perfect blend of Hawiian, contemporary, reggae. I don't understand a word of track 7 "Sosefina" but it one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. I can't wait to drive the Hana highway again and listen to this disc!
