Great Cookbook.. buy one ... great gift idea!
Created: 05/08/06
This is a great all around cook book.
It has easy to follow recipes.
This is one of those cookbooks every kitchen needs.
It does not matter what year a Better Homes and Garden cook book is, like the Betty Crocker cookbook.. this is the cookbook that new and experience cooks need in their kitchen.
Just a note: When they say to grease the bottom of the pan, they mean the inside of the bottom of the pan and not the underside. :-)
This cookbook has a great index so you can easily look up the recipe you need. Most recipes use items that are or should be found in most kitchens.
You will find recipes for appetizers, main dishes, deserts, baked goods, meats, veggies, canning instruction, freezing instructions, just about anything you need to know about what to do with that food in your kitchen.
These are all tried and tested recipes.
Remember with any recipe, fresh spices are stronger than older ones. You have to taste things to make sure they taste the way you want them to. Please remember not to taste items with uncooked foods in them. Safety first.
Cooking is about following the instructions, but also putting a bit of yourself in the recipe. If you like more cinnamon in your cinnamon raisin bread, then add it. If you do not like a certain food, omit it.
A note for those up to 50% of the American population that are allergic to white flour and either do or do not know it... You can substitute 1/2cup of corn starch for 1 cup of white flour. Add a teaspoon or so of Xanthum gum and double up on the eggs for most recipes. Oh and add a touch more sugar.
A note on nutrition: The heart knows what to do with butter... It does not know what to do with margarine. Watch your processed food intake for a healthier family.
Hotdogs and bologna put fat on a child faster than anything I have ever seen.
Diet Soda makes you crave carbs. Give it up for a couple of months and watch the weight come off. Oh you will find you crave the diet soda.. the body does crave drugs... By the way neuro surgeons did not want artificial sweeteners on the market. They are not good for the brain or body. Big business... The company that puts out the good press on artificial sweeteners makes them... go figure. Diet sodas are not good for the adult body and really do a number on our kids... Nutritionists say no more than 2 servings a day... not cans...servings.. ever wonder why?
Get back to basics.. Good home cooking.. This is the book to bring your family back to a healthier life style!
The cook book has the regular introduction with cooking terms, a section on buying and cooking meats.
If you need an all around good useful everyday cookbook that covers a wide verity of recipes.. buy it!
You cannot go wrong.
May God Bless!

The Cook Book with the Red and White Cover.

Growing up as a child, this was one of two cookbooks in my family home. I learned to cook with it, and found the pictures and step by step instructions to be very helpful. The color pictures in this much newer version than my original copy are not only beautiful, but give the reader an idea of how their finished product should look. I especially like the "Special Helps" section and the nutritional analysis for each recipe.
While I find it helpful that the book lays flat and stays open on the counter, it might also be helpful if there was a way to get it to stand up on its own so it didn't take up so much of my valuable counter space.
This cookbook is a must have for every beginner in the kitchen, and a great aid for anyone with experience who needs a reminder of how to do things, or pershaps, how to do things the right way!

Great Time Tested recipes that great cooks use. Lucky me, my wife wanted one, and my Mom (80) wanted a new one to replace her worn out one.

Good Old Standby

This is a cookbook that my mom uses and that I grew up wth. Her edition is from the very early 60's, and I have had one ever since I left home.
The cookbook offers recipes from basic to advanced with "how-to" tips and directions available for most cooking and baking techniques, so it is perfect for new cooks as well as advanced cooks.
I purchased this book to replace some of the pages that had worn out/gotten dirty in my 20-year old book.

A Good Buy

I had an older version of this cookbook that was falling apart. I decided to purchase this one because it was in excellent condition and had a very good price. I like it very much because it is a hard cover, 5-ring binder type of cook book which makes it very easy to open the pages and they lay flat. The hard cover also makes it easy to clean up and accidental spills or what not that may get on the book. The book is also full of useful hints, tips and shortcuts.
