Movie synopsis

Lane Myer's (John Cusack) dreams are shattered when his girlfriend Beth (Amanda Wyss) decides she prefers the company of a sleazy ski jock over his own. This disheartening news leads Lane to attempt to take his own life in various ways--all of which never seem to work out. But if he can beat Beth's new boyfriend in a ski run down the treacherous K-12, he may be able to win her back. Along the way, Lane also encounters a beautiful French exchange student, a nasal spray-snorting neighbor, a rabid newspaper boy, and dancing hamburgers. "Savage" Steve Holland (ONE CRAZY SUMMER) directs this 1985 cult favorite.

Better Off Dead DVD

Created: 09/12/10
This is one of my all-time favorite movies! I love the whacky, off-the-wall vibe of this film. John Cusack is great, as is the underrated Curtis Armstrong. This is the story of Lane Meyer (Cusack) whose girlfriend has left him for the captain of the ski team. Lane then tries to find ways to kill himself. But a new love interest inspires him to challenge for the top spot on the ski team. My favorite line is from Charles DeMarr (Armstrong) who says, "Lane, I've been going to this high school for seven and a half years. I'm no dummy." Enjoy this movie!

Great classic! Must see on one of "those" nights

THis is one of those classic 80's flix that was better of being categorized a strong B movie(like many 80's films).
You need a sence of humor to like this movie and you can't be too serious about life, love or yourself. If you are uptight don't bother.
THe newspaper boy, little brother and oblivious mom coupled with the nerd across the street and "trying to be hip" dad make me laugh every time.
Classic lines and memorable high school moments make it a great satire/romantic comedy.
One of my favorites!

Cusack's 'Better Off Dead' A Classic

Created: 10/05/08
This is one of the best movies ever for sheer entertainment. John Cusack is a wonderful actor, and even in this early film he is golden. Love the storyline, love the plot (even the silly parts), and LOVE the ending. Classic teen-bordering-coming-of-age romance. I saw this in the theater (no comment on MY age) and have watched it probably 30 times since then. One of my favorites, even if watching it DOES make me hit the 'Pause' button and run to the bathroom to make sure I don't have zits and braces..... Ahhhh, a classic childhood flashback inducer.

A hilarious 80's classic

Created: 08/06/06
I remember watching Better Off Dead at my sister's house when I was younger and loving it, but I could never find it in video stores because it's old and somewhat rare. It's one of those classic 80s comedies, on par with Fast Times at Ridgemont High, The Breakfast Club, Sixteen Candles, etc. I laugh every time I watch it.
I thought about it one day and decided I would try eBay and now I have my own copy. This is a must own flick!

"Better off" not seeing it. "Cult" fav'? That good/bad?

It's been a while, but I seem to remember thinking to myself I was "Better off NOT seeing it."

It may be one of those situations where an actor starts to think s/he is so good that a concerted effort is NOT required (i.e., that "name alone" will suffice to entertain "the fans").

I'm not against Cusack usually, but this one just didn't reach me :-(
