Bewitched (DVD, 2005, Special Edition)

Nora Ephron, Nicole Kidman, Will Ferrell|Theatrical release: 2005 | Rating: PG-13 (MPAA)

Movie synopsis

Director Nora Ephron (SLEEPLESS IN SEATTLE, YOU'VE GOT MAIL) breathes new life into the classic television show BEWITCHED in this romantic comedy of the same name. Movie star Jack Wyatt (Will Ferrell) had it all--until he made a few bad films and his wife left him. Now, the washed up star is slated to play Darrin in a remake of the 1960s sitcom about a mortal man who unknowingly marries a beautiful, good-hearted witch. Determined to resuscitate his career, Jack and his agent, Richie (Jason Schwartzman), demand that an unknown be cast as the witch, Samantha, in order to maximize his screen time and star power. After an exhaustive search for the right actress--and the perfect nose wiggle--Jack spots Isabel Bigelow (Nicole Kidman) in a book store and is convinced that she can be the new Samantha. And right he is; Isabel really is a witch who is determined to try life--and hopefully love--without magic, much to the chagrin of her debonair warlock father, Nigel (Michael Caine). Immediately drawn to Jack, Isabel follows her heart and takes the role only to discover that he has no plan to share the spotlight with her, and can also be a big jerk. Can Isabel refrain from using magic to put Jack in his place and win his love? And how will Jack react when he learns Isabel's secret?More interesting than a standard remake, the screenplay by Ephron and her sister Delia nicely weaves in the characters and basic plot of the original television series while developing a completely new story and characters. Shirley MacLaine stars as a legendary actress who plays Samantha's mother, Endora, in the new television show--and just may have a few secrets of her own. Steve Carell has an amusing turn as Uncle Arthur, a character originally played by comedian Paul Lynde.

Movie trailer and editorial reviews

"It's pleasant just to watch Ms. Kidman float through the movie's sets like a visitor from another land....This self-contained actress has rarely come across as relaxed in the company of another performer."
New York Times - Manohla Dargis (06/24/2005)

Funny yes, and I really should know better then going to watch a movie of a TV show I loved. The movie always turns it into something it wasn't. What about Larry Tate. YOu hve to have Larry Tate and you left out cotton top,, come on. A great cast and got some laughs,, all and all,, not good.

Bewitched is a Bummer... Sorry Will Ferrell

Bewitched had the billings for major movie success - Great name (hey its Bewitched right?!), great cast (Ferrell, Kidman, MacLaine, Caine - not bad!), good producing team, etc. But the movie was so-so - and I say that because I'm a diehard Will Ferrell fan... otherwise, I'd say it was worse! But while Will Ferrell provided lots of laughs and was quite good - there was no chemistry between him and Nicole Kidman... and I blame Nicole. She had no emotion throughout the movie and didn't show a moment of excitment or energy - in fact, I'd say she realized Tom Cruise earned the money and without him ... well she needs a check! I was surprised by her lack of energy and it sank the movie. Too bad because I expected much better!

So Cute

Created: 17/06/06
This was a very cute movie. I loved it. It was funny and romantic. Isabel(played by Kidman) is a real life witch cast as Samantha in a remake television show of Bewitched. Jack (played by Ferrel) is cast as Samantha's husband Darrel in the show. Isabel finds out that Jack is using her to gain popularity and she sets out for revenge. This is so cute. You'll love it.

Needs Some Additional Bewitching

Created: 25/06/07
Familiarity with the television series, immortalized by Elizabeth Montgomery, was my primary reason for viewing this film. I didn't expect much from Nicole Kidman, and I wasn't disappointed.

However, I was surprised by the appearances of Sir Michael Caine and Shirley MacLaine, and simply delighted by the family drawing room comedy that Nora Ephron created. The property possessed the posibility to be terminally boring, but Ephron gave the concept and plot a fresh spin that made it entertaining to watch.

"Bewitched" won't develop your conscience, but I think it is a great film for families, or to get away from the grind of the rat race. A solid buy, t bears watching more than once -- over time.

Amusing and Light-Hearted Entertainment

Created: 29/11/08
I saw this movie in 2005 in the theater and thought it amusing and light-hearted entertainment. I am a big fan of Nora Ephron, Nicole Kidman and Michael Caine. Will Farrell's frenetic portrayal of Darrin was not good and detracted from the original story, poor casting for that part. However, I adored Nicole Kidman in the part of Samantha. Her resemblance to Elizabeth Montgomery is remarkable. Charming movie, but not an Oscar contender.
