From Beyond DVD Review
Created: 10/11/08
One of the best horror movies ever made. This film is oozing with originality. Based on a short story written by H.P. Lovecraft, the filmakers take great liberty in expanding the story into a full feature film. Jeffrey Combs and Barbara Crampton return from the Re-Animator, as well as the director Stuart Gordon. The story is captivating. The gory parts are disturbing and creepy. Some of the special effects are a little cheezy, however for the time and considering the budget for the film they are very impressive. The movie is about a machine called the Resonator. This device stimulates the 6th sense in humans. The effects of this are dangerous. Highly recommended for fans of horror films, sci-fi and H.P. Lovecraft.

Like an acid trip, without the acid....

Such a crazy movie just as I remembered. When you see an H.R.Geiger film, you have to take a step back out of yourself and fully understand that reality doesn't matter. When experiments to find the "5th Sense" go awry, S + M and an overactive Penial gland help the doctor turned patient see the alternate universe around him. Still on the cutting edge of make-up and special effects, "From Beyond" is like an acid trip without the acid... Such an instant cult classic now on DVD it makes for a really fun adventure into the sublime and challenges the norm, and really makes you think for a minute that such a reality different from ours can be REAL!! (4 Stars from me!)

Good Sci-Fi

I had seen this when it came out and it was scary and shocking just like good horror is supposed to be. The best science fiction starts with a plausible idea and takes off from there. This is the case here. A machine that stimulates a gland in the brain that to this day science knows little about. The idea of inter-dimensional beings living outside our sensory range could explain a lot of paranormal things not to mention that todays physics that excepts no less than a possibility of up to 10 or more dimensions. When this came out on dvd I knew I would buy it and of coarse ebay was there for me once again. This is the directors fully restored version. I would not bother with any other version. YIKES!!!!!

FINALLY AVAILABLE AGAIN! YES!

this is one of my favorite horror movies of all time, though it is admittedly, a bit "cheesy"...the re-master is amazing and it is so awesome that this is finally available on DVD (the original film came out in 1986!)...this is an adaptation of an H.P. Lovecraft story (from "Doom that Came to Sarnath and Others") that originally is only a few pages in length, but does a good job of keeping the plot intact and still being able to "flesh it out" to fit a full-legnth motion-picture ...should especially appeal to people interested in the "dark side" of psychological/drug induced or "paranoid" states of consciousness types of stories, though the (possible) metaphor for "getting there" is the machine, "the resonator" and no actual drug use is present, whatsoever

Beyond and Above

Stuart Gordon had so much fun with Re-Animator that he took a crack at another H. P. Lovegraft short story, with similar results. As with "Herbert West -- The Re-Animator!", the Lovecraft story, "From Beyond," is just a jumping-off point for the film.
The original short story was rather dull, which means that the film is lively, a lot of fun, and fairly humorous. There are whole subplots in the film that weren't even hinted at in the original tale, not the least of which is the role of a woman in the story.
Gordon has a lot of fun with the special effects. It's as if he might be saying, "You liked Re-Animator? Watch this!"
The plot is simple, but who cares? the film is highly entertaining.
