Album Notes
Recorded live at The Bitter End, New York. Includes liner notes by Allan Sherman. All material written by Bill Cosby.Personnel: Bill Cosby (vocals).Liner Note Author: Allan Sherman.Recording information: Bitter End.Photographer: Don Bronstein.Bill Cosby's 1963 debut, on Warner Brothers, was a hit, but in retrospect his best material was yet to come, on subsequent recordings for the same label. He hadn't yet developed his cast of characters, his storytelling style or his capacity for stretching out like the jazzmen he admired and really letting a piece develop. Nevertheless, what people responded to was his good-natured conversational approach and goofy, surreal way of looking at his fellow humans--and there's plenty of that here. The centerpiece of this set is the "Noah" trilogy, three short conversations between Noah and "The Lord" (or, in the middle piece, a neighbor who can't get his car out of the driveway because Noah's under-construction ark is in the way). Cosby has already known how to make you forget you're hearing just one guy with a mike, as he brings out Noah's rising sarcasm over God's instructions ("Right...What's an ark?"). Cosby's revisionist imagination charms--in another piece ("The Coin Toss") he envisions a pair of great military conflicts in history as sporting events. RIGHT is a chance to hear Cosby at work just a few years before making records like WONDERFULNESS and TO RUSSELL, MY BROTHER.

Cosby's FAMILY-FRIENDLY, Story-Telling Stand-Up Comedy.

Created: 17/02/08
Bill Cosby's debut album Is A Very Funny Fellow, Right (1963/1995) presents great story-telling, uproariously funny stand-up comedy, for the most part. Some of the material is dated, but all very good. While Cosby's well-known cast of characters and comedic style are still very much in development, his conversational routines and jazz style are all here.

The centerpiece of the album is the "Noah" trilogy, three short conversations between Noah and the Lord which are the impetus of the "Right!" part of the album title. It contains some of the wonderful mike work for which Cosby will become well know. His updated and sarcastic exchange with God is very funny and lends a new perspective to the biblical account in Genesis.

RIGHT is a fine example of story-telling comedy and is family-friendly. It is an album worth owning and is an excellent learning tool for aspiring stand-up comedians.

Hilarity for any generation.

The thing I appreciate the most about Bill Cosby is that he appeals to so many types of people. He can be hilarious to a person of any age, which is very rare nowadays. Part of the reason is that he's always been a clean comic; no turning the air blue like so many others do. I am in my 20's and I think he is great! I bought this album about a year ago, but I'd heard many of the skits when I was six or so because my mother had them and I thought he was hilarious then! As you get older, you realize that there are some jokes that only someone older would get, but everything is done tastefully.

This album features Bill's very famous Noah and the Lord routine, which I've loved since the first time I heard it. "Superman" is one of those jokes that has a tinge of adult humor to it and it is great! "Hoof and Mouth" is a short, clever little skit that makes it seem that cows aren't as dumb as they look. "Karate" is my personal favorite on this one. It just gets funnier and funnier as it goes on.

Every routine is a classic as is this album, Bill's first. What an awesome way to start! If you like funny jokes that don't require offending the listener, than this is for you. HIGHLY recommended!

Bill Cosby, good clean comedy

Created: 07/01/09
I remember listening to this album on a record album maybe in the late 60s. On a whim I searched and sure enough it had been copied to a cd. I was elated and waited in anticipation to hear the segments on Noah and the ark again. Bill Cosby is one of the best comedians of all time. I enjoy hearing someone that does not have to use vulgar language to be funny. Just wish it was longer. Well worth the purchase.

Bill Cosby is a very funny fellow-right

Created: 01/07/09
I had this album when I as a kid in the 60s. It has some classic, clean and funny "stories". The reason I got it was some friends and my brother were over and he was saying "right" the way Cosby does in "Noah", which is our favorite track. It got us laughing when we started talking about it and wondered if it was out on cd. So- we looked, and ordered it. It still makes us all crack up!
