Tracks 1-12 originally released on Colgems (109). Includes liner notes by Andrew Sandoval. For a Top Three album (their final high-charting LP) by a group considered by most listeners to be a fairly lightweight pop/rock band, The Birds, The Bees & the Monkees was in some ways a pretty strange -- if pretty inconsistent -- mix of material. That goes triple for Rhino Handmade's deluxe box set edition of the album, a pull-out-the-stops production that even the most ardent Monkees fanatic would have considered absolutely unfathomable back in the 20th century. It does feature both the stereo and mono versions of the original album, but that's almost the least of it, for the three CDs feature a whopping 80 tracks in all. Even discounting the two-dozen cuts comprising the stereo and mono versions of the record, that leaves 56 bonus tracks. Most of that bonus material was previously unreleased, and much of the remaining had first appeared on specialized CD compilations. It's not so much an expanded version of an album as a massive compendium of Monkees sessions from late 1967 and early 1968, including quite a few efforts on which just one Monkee is present. It goes without saying that you've got to be a major fan to wade through this mountain. It's both stylistically eclectic and maddeningly artistically inconsistent, and the presence of multiple versions of many of the tracks makes it something that can challenge the non-obsessive, no matter how intelligently they're spaced apart. Regardless of whether you're fanatical about or dismissive of the Monkees, however, anyone would have to agree that the sheer variety is extraordinary. There's dippy pop dominated by outside writers and session players; pleasant country-folk-rock, sometimes with support from Stephen Stills and Dewey Martin of Buffalo Springfield; quasi-theatrical tunes (especially "My Share of the Sidewalk," in different versions featuring both Davy Jones and Mike Nesmith on lead vocals); weirdness verging on unstable psychedelia ("Merry Go Round"); and even a cover of a Pete Seeger song, "Seeger's Theme."Some of the material comprises their best non-hits, and features Peter Tork (who did not play or sing a note on the tracks released on The Birds, The Bees & the Monkees), both of which benefit from the chance for retrospective exposure. His "Lady's Baby," unsurprisingly similar to Buffalo Springfield down to the presence of Stills and Martin, is the best of his compositions ever released; his reading of Michael Martin Murphey's stark, almost medieval-ish "(I Prithee) Do Not Ask for Love" is also worth hearing, as is "Merry Go Round," which he co-wrote with Diane Hildebrand, an occasional composer of other Monkees material. At the other end of the extreme, Micky Dolenz's rehearsal of "Shorty Blackwell" is positively painful. Most of it falls somewhere between the two poles, and might leave the impression the Monkees were a more avant-garde band than they actually were, owing to how different the songs and production were depending on which member was showcased and whether the track was intended as singles material or a vehicle for their ...

A brilliant box set of a classic 5th album

Created: 10/01/11
By the spring of 1968, The Monkees were a true pop music sensation. Their network television sitcom was still enjoying high ratings; they played at sold-out concerts; all 4 of their first albums went to number one. So, there was much anticipation for their 5th LP, titled "The Birds, The Bees & The Monkees". This was the first album they issued which contained the credit "Produced by the Monkees". This album was full of great songs that continued to showcase the group's endless talents. Among the highlights are the top 40 hit song "Tapioca Tundra"; the top five smash hit single "Valleri"; the classic number one recording of "Daydream Believer". Combine these 3 songs with the other 9 tracks, and you have a rather unique and eclectic assortment of musical moments. Now, this Rhino Handmade version is in a 3-disc CD deluxe edition. Disc one features the stereo version and disc two contains the original mono mix. Plus, both of these discs as well as the entire third disc contain a wealth of alternate mixes, recording oddities, and previously unreleased tracks, as well as 2 original radio spots that were produced to help promote the album's release in the then-newly created Stereo 8 tape cartridge format. This album was also the last Monkees LP to be issued in both mono and stereo mixes. By 1968, mono albums were being completely phased out of the record buying public, replaced soley by stereo discs only. Thus, the original mono version of this album was a very limited pressing. One of its most intriguing moments is the alternate mono mix of "Auntie's Municipal Court", which has remained a true audio rarity until now. Finally, Rhino has presented both stereo and mono mixes of this great album, in its entirety. The three discs comprise a total of 87 tracks, giving every Monkees fan a very pleasurable listening experience. In addition to all of the great music, the set also features a 24-page color companion book with many great photos - plus, an excellent essay about this album written by noted Monkees historian Andrew Sandoval. This set is packaged in a 7" x 7" container. On the inside of the front cover is a faithful reproduction of the Monkees side of a 1968 vinyl LP inner sleeve, which shows the covers of the group's first 5 albums. It is shown in original black-and-white. If one cannot be totally convinced that this CD is everything that any Monkees fan would want, then the opening comments from the accompanying book says it all: "Engineers chasing an infant with a microphone, an ode to two mythical warlords, the birth of crackle-and-skip lo-fi, plus three Top 40 singles...it's the tale of The Birds, The Bees & The Monkees". Available only as a numbered limited edition from Rhino Handmade.
