    Synopsis
From the author of GOODBYE, CHUNKY RICE, this is a coming-of-age memoir in graphic novel format. Craig Thompson recounts his childhood in a fundamentalist Wisconsin household, his early attempts at art (condemned by his parents and their peers as sinful), and his first love, a needy young woman whose parents are divorcing. The fluid, black-and-white illustrations eloquently convey the emotions of its painfully vulnerable characters.

    Publisher's Note
At 592 pages, Blankets may well be the single largest graphic novel ever published without being serialized first. Wrapped in the landscape of a blustery Wisconsin winter, Blankets explores the sibling rivalry of two brothers growing up in the isolated country, and the budding romance of two coming-of-age lovers. A tale of security and discovery, of playfulness and tragedy, of a fall from grace and the origins of faith. A profound and utterly beautiful work from Craig Thompson. The New Printing corrects 3 small typos, widening the spine graphics, but otherwise is identical to the first printing.

    Industry Reviews
"...[A] superb example of the art of cartooning: the blending of word and picture to achieve an effect that neither is capable of without the other....[A] graphic novel of great sensitivity and insight."
Bloomsbury Review - Robert C. Harvey

"Thompson manages to explore adolescent social yearnings, the power of young love and the complexities of sexual attraction with a rare combination of sincerity, pictorial lyricism and taste. His exceptional b&w drawings balance representational precision with a bold and wonderfully expressive line for pages of ingenious, inventively composes and poignant imagery." (starred review)

    Introducing the Graphic Novel

    Created: 13/01/07
Many people scorn graphic novels as childish comic books. One reading of Craig Thompson's "Blankets" will let one know graphic novels and comic books are two different genres, a second reading will let one know they are reading a master at "yuugen" or mystery and depth.

Huge splash pages make this novel a great work of art!

Thompson's novel is very different than other graphic novels because each of these gorgeous pages were painted by him over the course of 4 years. They tell the true story of his first love. When interveiwed, he said he wished to not show first love, but "the first time of sleeping next to someone." (Don't worry, it's not pornographic.) It also explores his religeous crisis: what does one do when they feel lust? Are they still Christian? This novel also shows the relationship Craig has to his brother, Phil. With interwoven Bible stories, Plato's cave, and many other influences in young Craig's life... it is apparent why the simple liking of another was so revolutionary to this guilt-ridden teen.

A must read for all graphic novel fans, and a great way to be introduced to the genre. (It's also won many awards!)

"Blankets" was my first real encounter with a graphic novel; and it was splendid. Thompson's beautifully depicted illustrations combined with his witty perspective created not only an enjoyable read, but left me wanting to read more. He's not an author who gives too much away, he allows you to ponder over the words he has written and guess at the missing links. The story follows a young boy through adolescence and his first real love. The uncertainty and newness of a first love is depicted beautifully. It is most certainly a down to earth, real life experience that we've all been through, and Craig sheds light on those tender moments in a way that is simply stunning.

Its a wonderful book and I would suggest it to anyone.
