Bloodrayne (DVD, 2006, 2-Disc Set, Unrated Director's Cut)

Uwe Boll, Kristanna Loken, Michelle Rodriguez|Theatrical release: 2006 | Rating: Unrated

Movie synopsis

IN THEATERS 1/6/2006American teenager Rayne is the product of a Romanian vampire's rape of a human woman. Born with revenge in her soul, Rayne goes to Europe to track down her father with only one intent: to kill him. This stylish horror film is based on the video game of the same name., This action-horror film is set in ancient Romania and stars Kristianna Loken (TERMINATOR 3) as Rayne, a half-human/half-vampire sworn to kill her evil tyrant vampire father (Ben Kingsley). Michael Madsen, Michelle Rodriguez, and Matthew Davis play a trio of vampire hunters who ally themselves with Rayne. Based on a video game, this film earns its R-rating by offering a lot more blood, gore, and nudity--and less CGI effects--than most of its modern vamp contemporaries. With all its swords, chained breasts, gushing arteries, and severed heads, BLOODRAYNE seems more like a welcome throwback to those great early 1980s drive-in sword and sorcery flicks. In between the slashing and gouging there are torch-lit castles, nefarious booby traps, blurry flashbacks, and aerial camera shots that swoop down through the gorgeous Carpathian landscapes. Loken, with her fangs and low-rider leather chaps, looks pretty gorgeous herself, and there's a surprising number of name actors in bit parts, including Meat Loaf (as a vamp surrounded by nubile naked concubines), Geraldine Chaplin (as a fortune teller), and--clearly having the most fun--Billy Zane as a bored vampire king plotting to take over the kingdom. It's directed by Uwe Boll, the man who gave us the video game adaptations of HOUSE OF THE DEAD and ALONE IN THE DARK. Cult cinema fans should take this one to--and through--the heart, especially for the chance to see Madsen's period costume and long hair.

Will Watch This DVD Again !

This movie is great if you are a fan of horror/vampire genre movies. I read negative comments about Uwe Boll as a director before I saw Bloodrayne and I have to disagree. He does a great job with Bloodrayne. I haven't seen anything else he has directed but may do so. From the DVD interview, he comes across as a pretty smart and educated guy with a sense of humor about the movies he makes and his critics. The DVD version I saw, has the Uwe Boll interview, MOS CGI special effects clips, and director's commentary. I would try and find one with more special features. It did have the PC game included.
This movie is lots of fun to watch with plenty of blood spilling action. Plus, with beautiful Kristanna Loken playing the lead, you can't lose. Ms. Loken plays Rayne, a half human half vampire out to kill her father, played by Ben Kingsley (remember him as Ghandi ?), the most powerful vampire in the world who killed Rayne's human mother. Atmospheric locations and cool special effects add to the high quality of the movie. I repeat, if you are a fan of this type of movie, it is well worth the money.
There is a Bloodrayne computer/video game which I don't know anything about. I heard about Bloodrayne from Wizard magazine and I have read the comic book.

Rates with some of the worst movies I have ever seen.

Created: 23/06/06
I was bored looking for a movie had seen it at the store a few times liked the video game so I figured what hey why not buy it I liked Kristanna Loken from Teminator 3 , Michelle Rodriguez (SWAT) and Michael Madsen (Resevoir Dogs) so I figured it couldn't be all bad. Went in with low expectations and was completely astonished at how much worse it actually was, bad acting and I know albeit not the greatest actors and actresses but they can and have done much better. So that would lead me to believe that the director Uwe Boll is at fault, given his track record with the likes of Alone in the Dark and House of the Dead it becomes very clear I don't think I will ever watch another of his movies again, and I don't recommend anyone else do either.

Unique Vampire Movie

Created: 12/12/07
I have always been a fan of vampire movies and books so my opinion might be a little biased, but I really liked Bloodrayne. A lot of vampire movies are predictable and a little cheesy but Bloodrayne stands out as totally unique from start to finish in every way. The main starring character is a women which in itself is different who happens to be the child of a mortal mother and a vampire father. Kristanna Loken plays this part flawlessly. The big name costars, Ben Kingsley, Michelle Rodiguez, Michael Madsen and Billy Zane add their considerable talent to the great plot. The action is non stop and sure to please if you're a fan of action / adventure and / or vampire movies.

Great actors, crappy dialogue/exposition

Created: 07/11/06
I rented Bloodrayne on Comcast On Demand and realized about twenty minutes into it that this movie was scattered in terms of its exposition. The director seems to take us from one point to the next with no real "flow" to Bloodrayne's origins. One minute we see her at a carnival as an attraction, the next she escapes and starts killing people. It just didn't seem to fit. As I have never played the game, I thought I could learn about it and, if I liked the movie, buy the game. Alas I will not.

As far as acting is concerned, it comes across as wooden because the dialogue is so terrible. Whoever wrote this movie needs to be given the Bubonic plague for allowing my ears to hear the utterly mid-twentieth lines used in a sixteenth century context. People then didn't talk like we do now and no matter how many people you get to act with an english accent, it still sounds fake.

The redeming part in this movie (which is the only reason I'd buy it) is the gratuitous nude scene of Kristanna Loken. I'm as horny as the next guy and I probably would "toss one off" to her when she takes her top off, but that doesn't excuse it's poor choice of words. Come to think of it, I probably will buy this just to see her chest. But that's besides the point.

If you want to see Ms. Loken's chest, then buy this film. If you want to see some campy blood scenes and a plot with more holes than swiss cheese, then buy this film. Other than those things, just rent this or maybe save yourself some money and simply don't watch it. At the very least, please don't buy this film for $19.99, you will be getting taken advantage of and I will be forced to slap the producer and director for stealing your money while then visiting you personally to insult you for wasting your money.

good summer night fare

Created: 25/06/06
I've seen this in the Theatre and bought it on DVD to throw on the shelf next to all the other hyperviolent anti-heroine flicks that came out in the same time period (Hey I also picked up a complete Shakespeare collection so don't fret about my acculturation).

In any case most of the bad reviews I've read about it singled out The director for personal hatred. If you put aside the fact you don't like the guy on a personal level, his movies are actually good in that they do what they are intended to do. i.e. entertain you for a few hours. This movie did that well enough. It is no worse than 95% of the sci-fi channel "features" or the Troma films of the 80's.

In the end I'd say if you're bored and are just looking to drink a cold one and eat some pizza while watching an action movie this is a decent pick.
