Before Planet Earth there was Blue Planet
Created: 17/04/08
BBC's Blue Planet: Seas of Life is the perfect compliment to the newer Planet Earth series. I bought Planet Earth originally and then realized that I needed the other BBC series too. In fact, I don't see how you can appreciate one without the other. Extraordinary footage and eloquent narration by David Attenborough highlight each chapter of the series. Water covers 70% of the planet, and is truly a powerful force, yet we know less about our oceans than we do about the surface of the moon and even some other planets. Five years in the making, with a budget of over $10 million, The Blue Planet: Seas of Life is the most comprehensive series to date on the ocean and its wildlife. There are over 400 total minutes of footage. The 5th disc wasn't my favorite, but it included some interesting things that were about average. The 4 original discs are the true gems here!

Again BBC has done it better than ever!
My family and I love the wonders of the worlds. It gives a chance to dream together of place or things we would like to see or do together or "someday". It show us living things we have never imagined. I would recommend this set as well as all of the BBC Planet Series to any family for video night, the DVD's are much better than just watching a plain old movie (although we do like those to) these series are just awe inspiring and a great addition to any home movie collection! I can't say there is anything bad about them. I love to just sit down on a saturday, put in one of the DVD's kick back, relax, and just dream.
They are a very good resource to help teach our children that we need to respect and protect every living thing on this Earth, even if we don't think it matters because it does. All of the BBC Planet Series are a great tool for teaching and every school, library, and PBS should show it more often so that maybe then more and more people will learn to protect our Earth before anther species is gone! Even if it is a fish is still is an a living creature GONE forever.
As for the price, watch eBay you'll find one cheap enough! Almost everyone who sells DVD's always has a sales. If not there are always some that do start at .99 cents or even .01 cents. I didn't have to pay an arm and a leg for my copy. I just waited and bid, set your limit, and you will get one soon enough. Good luck you wont be disappointed.

The Blue Planet: This time it's all wet!

If you enjoyed the other excellent BBC documentary PLANET EARTH, this is also worth owning. With its stunning photography and attention to detail, this 5 DVD set thoroughly covers the oceans and the life contained therein. If I had to nit-pick on anything, it might be with narrator David Attenborough. Although competent and professional, his slightly muffled and monotone voice does not capture your attention like, lets say James Earl Jones, but the information comes through. May I suggest watching the "making of" special features before watching any of the main programs. The dedication and effort that went into capturing the images makes them even more riveting. For a 2002 production, the Dolby sound is quite good; so much so, that you might want to mop up around your speakers after viewing. If nature programs are your thing, this series should be on your short list!

Great on its own or as an adjunct to Planet Earth

Incredible cinematography bring the world of both well-known and highly unusual sea creatures to your living room. The DVD explains how the animals live in their specialized ecosystems. It moves seamlessly from one animal to the next and captures some unique footage that makes your jaw drop. It presents a great deal of information about the plants and animals and each person who views it will discover new aspects of even the most familiar animals.
As if this isn't enough, the bonus material explains the incredible journey of the people who obtained the footage. Deep sea submarines, fishing boats, and scuba divers all played their part.
Each time you watch the videos, you will discover things you had not noticed on previous viewings. Blue Planet is a family friendly video, but has some parts where animals are hunting other animals that are a bit graphic for the young or the squeamish.
