Baker; David Redfern; Claude Van Heye; Jan Persson.Arranger: Jimi Hendrix. When the American expatriate James Marshall Hendrix made his triumphant return to the United States with ARE YOU EXPERIENCED?, he'd just smelted British pop psychedelia, R&B, Bob Dylan and Cream into a gleaming rock and roll alloy. Nothing quite looked or sounded like the musical melting pot that was the Jimi Hendrix Experience. Yet the American release of ARE YOU EXPERIENCED? differed from the British version in one significant respect: "Everybody was scared to relase `Red House' in America," Hendrix recalled, "because they said `America don't like blues, man!'"Yes, it's hard to believe, but the Experience's original rendition of Jimi's epic "Red House" (recorded in London on December 13, 1966) appears stateside for the very first time on this superb compilation of Hendrix rarities (including 8 previously unreleased tracks), simply entitled BLUES.BLUES is probably the best packaged, richest sounding, most coherent post-mortem release from the Hendrix archives. Fleshed out by Michael J. Fairchild's detailed, informative essay, BLUES portrays Jimi Hendrix as a classic bluesman, a devout student of the tradition from down home delta stylings to sophisticated urban forms. Framed by his poignant 1967 acoustic 12-string rendition of "Hear My Train 'A Comin'" and a stirring 1970 trio performance, these 11 rough and ready tracks illustrate Hendrix's deep spiritual connections to his blues roots, and his daring experimental take on the shape of future blues to come. Thus you have a moody studio outtake of his autobiographical "Voodoo Chile Blues" and a ruminative "Born Under A Bad Sign" (in which his Albert King tribute evolves with raga-like complexity). Hendrix's "Catfish Blues" is a powerful evocation of tribal elders Robert Johnson and Muddy Waters, while his abstract chord changes and soaring, strident leads on the shuffling "Jelly 292" are an affectionate parody of classic urban blues lines such as "After Hours" and "Sweet Home Chicago." Taken as a whole, Jimi Hendrix's BLUES is the portrait of a great American original who was (like Stevie Ray Vaughan a generation later) just beginning to scratch the surface of his awesome talent.

Jimi Hendrix - 'Blues' (MCA) 4 1/2 stars

    Created: 05/02/09
Hadn't seen this particular CD title in ages. Simply too many conpilations out there to keep up with. 'Blues' is basically a must-have collection of eleven superbly-played blues numbers by the late Mr. Hendrix. Cuts I simply could not get enough of were both versions of "Hear My Train A Comin'", his Cream cover "Born Under A Bad Sign", the familiar-sounding "Catfish Blues", one track that I've never heard before "Mannish Boy", the heart-felt "Once I Had A Woman" and the awesome "Electric Church Red House". Highly recommended.

    It Works Though

    Created: 22/09/09
Jimi Hendrix as a blues man rather than the visionary psychedelic rocker we generally think of him as. But this collection of previously unreleased material truely works as an example of blues spirit and soul. Jimi does a couple of covers of blues artists' tunes but much of the compositions are his own creations. There are additional blues covers in later previously unreleased material such as "The Jimi Hendrix Experience", 4 CD box set released in 2000 but the tone of this compilation's tracks ache with a blues feel. My brother told me about it and I could not learn of its existence on wikipedia but as he insisted I checked my allmusic guide and found it. A must for any Hendrix fan and for blues music fans alike. Come on - its Jimi oh-my-god Hendrix for pete's sake. Many still argue the best electric guitarist of ALL time. Indeed, this was a generally accepted statement of fact prior to his 1970 death. His talent is blatantly obvious on each track of this album.

awsome cd. i own almost all of Jimi's released cd's and this one seems to be one of the better ones. Jimi's 12 string accustic version of "hear my train comin'" and other tracks like "Manish boy" and "jam 292" are awsome tracks.

This is arguably the best electric blues by anybody!!

I'm a guitar player from the delta in the south. I grew up around hearing some of the best blues guitar players white and black, young and old. And Jimi Hendrix is like a god to me. So this is the ultimate album.

    Great Hendrix album

    Created: 28/11/05
I was surprised how good this album is: I wasn't expecting the quality or the stylistic content - I guess I should have known better. Hendrix was one of the most gifted musicians of the last century (I think that was Miles Davis's opinion as well) and even though he didn't exactly complete the job (dying in his late twenties) there is much excellent material to be had. This is one of them. My favourite album remains Axis: Bold as Love, but this is not far off. Great listening.
