    Synopsis
Boston Medical Examiner Maura Isles's newest case provides clues to her hitherto unknown past in this fourth thriller to star her and Homicide Detective Jane Rizzoli. Isles is shocked by the sight of a murdered woman who resembles her in every detail. Could she be the adopted Isles's twin, the sister she never knew she had? Somehow, the death is linked to a serial killer targeting pregnant women, which means that the currently pregnant Rizzoli could be next on his list.

    Publisher's Note
Boston medical examiner Dr. Maura Isles literally meets her match–and must face a savage serial killer and shattering personal revelations–in the brilliant new novel of suspense by the New York Times bestselling author of The Surgeon and The Sinner.
Dr. Maura Isles makes her living dealing with death. As a pathologist in a major metropolitan city, she has seen more than her share of corpses every day–many of them victims of violent murder. But never before has her blood run cold, and never has the grim expression “dead ringer” rung so terrifyingly true. Because never before has the lifeless body on the medical examiner’s table been her own.
Yet there can be no denying the mind-reeling evidence before her shocked eyes and those of her colleagues, including Detective Jane Rizzoli: the woman found shot to death outside Maura’s home is the mirror image of Maura, down to the most intimate physical nuances. Even more chilling is the discovery that they share the same birth date and blood type. For the stunned Maura, an only child, there can be just one explanation. And when a DNA test confirms that Maura’s mysterious doppelgänger is in fact her twin sister, an already bizarre murder investigation becomes a disturbing and dangerous excursion into a past full of dark secrets.
Searching for answers, Maura is drawn to a seaside town in Maine where other horrifying surprises await. But perhaps more frightening, an unknown murderer is at large on a cross-country killing spree. To stop the massacre and uncover the twisted truth about her own roots, Maura must probe her first living subject: the mother that she never knew . . . an icy and cunning woman who could be responsible for giving Maura life–and who just may have a plan to take it away.

BODY DOUBLE: Another Thrilling Tess Gerritsen Whodunit

    Created: 21/10/09
What's not to like about a book where, when confronted with a killing with a rare Black Talon bullet, one of the cops wonders aloud where the now illegal payload can even be found and another cop quips, "Try eBay"? We all know that the sale of live bullets is no longer allowed on eBay, and we all know why. And it's a very good thing. But it is nice to know that eBay is the first place people think of when looking for something rare.

As it turned out, the bullet in this suspenseful psycho-thriller by series author Tess Gerritsen didn't come from eBay either. Instead, it came from a gun held by — but that would be telling, and we don't want to ruin the suspense now, do we?

When Boston Medical Examiner Dr. Maura Isles finds that a murdered woman looks exactly like her, her life is catapulted into freefall. She was adopted; could this be a twin sister she never knew she had? And what was she doing in front of Maura's house when she was killed?

"Body Double" is the fourth book in the Dr. Maura Isles and Detective Jane Rizzoli series, and it's the first time we've really begun to learn any of Maura's family history. This book forces her to delve into that heretofore unvoiced past. Eventually all is more or less resolved, as in all really satisfying mysteries, but Maura's life will never be the same.

Gerritsen has been called "the queen of the suspense medical thriller", and books like "Body Double" are the reason why. The medical-examiner details in this series are nowhere on any kind of par with Patricia Cornwell's Kay Scarpetta series, or Kathy Reichs' Temperance Brennan books — in fact, medical details are noticeably sparse — but the suspense is breathtaking, and the plot twists and turns are exhilarating. Even if you haven't yet heard the other books in the series, you will enjoy the ride. And if you do, then you've got several more treats in store.

But do yourself a favor and look for the unabridged version, because abridged versions of anything by definition have to leave out some of the good stuff. You can only hope there's plenty more left behind, which in this case there pretty much is.
