Bolt (Blu-ray Disc, 2009, With DisneyFile)

Byron Howard, Chris Williams|Theatrical release: 2008 | Rating: PG (MPAA)

Movie synopsis

In this 2008 computer-animated Disney film, an adorable dog named Bolt (voiced by John Travolta) has been trained to believe that he has superpowers, and that his young owner, Penny (Miley Cyrus), is in perpetual peril, thanks to the schemes of the dastardly Dr. Calico (Malcolm McDowell). However, the loving and protective Bolt and his human companion are really actors in a popular TV show, a production that goes to great lengths to make sure its star pooch remains in the dark about his fictitious life. When Bolt is accidentally transported off his show's Hollywood lot, he must find his way back home and contend with his not-so-super reality, aided by a scrappy alley cat (Susie Essman) and a very enthusiastic hamster (Mark Walton).Helmed by animation vets and first-time feature directors Byron Howard and Chris Williams, BOLT benefits from executive producer John Lasseter's sterling Pixar touch, often echoing themes of that beloved company's canon, particularly 1995's groundbreaking TOY STORY. Although BOLT doesn't quite hit Pixar heights, it stands out as one of Disney's best early-21st-century offerings, thanks in large part to its title character, who is beautifully rendered and endearingly portrayed by Travolta. A fun movie that will particularly delight elementary-school children, BOLT is excellent family fare and easily one of the finest dog-themed films in cinema history., When an accident transports canine actor Bolt from Hollywood to the streets of New York City, the poor pup has to try to make his way home. But soon Bolt realizes that he doesn't have all the special powers that his TV alter ego does, and things get a lot tougher! John Travolta provides the voice for the dog of the title in this animated film, while comedienne Susie Essman cracks the audience up with her portrayal of a cat named Mittens. Fans of HANNAH MONTANA will be pleased to hear young star Miley Cyrus providing a voice as well.

Movie trailer and editorial reviews

"An enjoyable animated family film, BOLT features some engaging 3-D sequences and distinctly lump-in-the-throat moments for dog lovers."
USA Today - Claudia Puig (11/21/2008)

"BOLT is a sweet Disney family film....It's laced with idiosyncratic characters with pleasantly wacky attitudes....BOLT also has an intriguing plot that is kind of the family animation version of the Jim Carrey-starring THE TRUMAN SHOW..."
Los Angeles Times - Kenneth Turan (11/21/2008)

"[F]risky, funny and inventive enough to engage the attention of grown-ups as well as children....What keeps BOLT fresh is an unaffected exuberance, a genuine sense of fun, that is expressed above all through obsessive attention to craft."
New York Times - A. O. Scott (11/21/2008)

"[A] blithe, digitally animated doggy comedy as zippy as its name....It's a sturdy beaut." -- Grade: A-
Entertainment Weekly - Lisa Schwarzbaum (11/28/2008)

4 stars out of 5 -- "[A]n end credits duet between Smiley and the Trav offers an effective summation of the flick's winning combo of old and new."
Total Film - Neil Smith (02/01/2009)

3 stars out of 5 -- "It opens with a thrilling installment of cute puppy dog Bolt's action-packed TV sereies...It's THE TRUMAN SHOW with a four-legged Jim Carrey."
Empire - Helen O'Hara (03/01/2009)

"[The directors] keep things moving along at a pleasant visual clip....There's a terrific tenderness in Travolta's performance, while Cyrus and company are similarly effective..."
Hollywood Reporter - Michael Rechtshaffen (11/13/2008)

Man's (Or Woman's) Best Friend

Created: 11/01/10
I really loved this movie, although I don't typically care for movies that have syrupy musical interludes (and there are a couple), I could overlook them for the creativity of the storyline as well as the incredible animation. I've seen this in HD on TV but the BD version totally blows you away. The movie "Cars" is the same on BD - no comparison. John Travolta gave the title character a totally lovable persona, & the relationship between the dog, cat & hamster was great. I wonder how much U-Haul was paid for this movie as their equipment is prominently displayed during the animals cross-country trip. All in all, an excellent movie for young & old alike - especially in blu ray!

Great Movie but HORRIBLE Bluray menu design

Created: 28/03/09
I loved the film when I first watched it w/ 3D glasses in the movie theater and I watched it in Spanish...haha. It was so cute, like most of the Disney animation films. On the 23rd of March, I got the Bluray+DVD combo pack as a gift. I was so excited UNTIL I played the bluray disc on the PS3 and found out that the menu interface was HORRIBLE.

When I tried the popup menu, the movie scales down to 1/8 - 1/4 of the screen, so the whole menu pretty much overshadowed the movie. It was total waste of real state (screen space). A total disappointment! I felt that I was playing World of Warcraft or something.

I'm not trying to bash (well, actually I am :P ) Deluxe Digital Studios about their poor menu design and development; but this is the big proof that "cheap contractors with 10 PhD's" from other countries aren't necessary the right people to do these types of jobs.

Now, regarding their BD-Live, another disappointment. Somehow the software doesn't connect well to the internet. But I'm not going to criticize this feature since it still kind of "in process of development." Even Sony DADC's developers are working hard on this. But as for Bluray menu design, the best are done by Sony DAC or 1K Studios (this last one got screwed because they were on the HD-DVD side).

Anyway, overall...as I said, the film is great but the software is a big no. For now, just stick to Netflix :P , Disney is going to come up with some type of "Special Edition" in the future anyway, by that time, Bluray technology will be at its full potential. But if you just want to get that magic code to gain rewards (rewards that look exactly the same as the ones from the $0.99 stores) go ahead and enjoy them...

Bolt (Blue-ray Disc,with Disney File)

What a cute movie! Bolt thinks he is a Super Dog. He is a Star in a Hollywood movie along with his owner Penny. He gets separated from Penny when he thinks she needs rescuing. He meets up with mittens and Rhino and they help him get back to Hollywood, and along the way have a great adventure! This Blue Ray is a great transfer! Excellent picture and sound. A great purchase for a little escapism.

Great movie for adults and kids.

This is a really great movie. In the footsteps of the "Incredible Journey" bolt has to find his way back home with a motley crew of new friends. There's alot of laughs along the way for sure. In true Pixar fashion its one of the best animated movies I've seen.

I can almost guarantee you'll love it.

Bolt is a movie with a really clever plot. The characters are new and interesting .This is Disney magic at it's best. A lot of fun for young and old alike. The Blu-Ray format makes it just that much better.
