Movie synopsis

In this 2008 computer-animated Disney film, an adorable dog named Bolt (voiced by John Travolta) has been trained to believe that he has superpowers, and that his young owner, Penny (Miley Cyrus), is in perpetual peril, thanks to the schemes of the dastardly Dr. Calico (Malcolm McDowell). However, the loving and protective Bolt and his human companion are really actors in a popular TV show, a production that goes to great lengths to make sure its star pooch remains in the dark about his fictitious life. When Bolt is accidentally transported off his show's Hollywood lot, he must find his way back home and contend with his not-so-super reality, aided by a scrappy alley cat (Susie Essman) and a very enthusiastic hamster (Mark Walton).Helmed by animation vets and first-time feature directors Byron Howard and Chris Williams, BOLT benefits from executive producer John Lasseter's sterling Pixar touch, often echoing themes of that beloved company's canon, particularly 1995's groundbreaking TOY STORY. Although BOLT doesn't quite hit Pixar heights, it stands out as one of Disney's best early-21st-century offerings, thanks in large part to its title character, who is beautifully rendered and endearingly portrayed by Travolta. A fun movie that will particularly delight elementary-school children, BOLT is excellent family fare and easily one of the finest dog-themed films in cinema history., When an accident transports canine actor Bolt from Hollywood to the streets of New York City, the poor pup has to try to make his way home. But soon Bolt realizes that he doesn't have all the special powers that his TV alter ego does, and things get a lot tougher! John Travolta provides the voice for the dog of the title in this animated film, while comedienne Susie Essman cracks the audience up with her portrayal of a cat named Mittens. Fans of HANNAH MONTANA will be pleased to hear young star Miley Cyrus providing a voice as well.

Movie trailer and editorial reviews

"An enjoyable animated family film, BOLT features some engaging 3-D sequences and distinctly lump-in-the-throat moments for dog lovers."
USA Today - Claudia Puig (11/21/2008)

"BOLT is a sweet Disney family film....It's laced with idiosyncratic characters with pleasantly wacky attitudes....BOLT also has an intriguing plot that is kind of the family animation version of the Jim Carrey-starring THE TRUMAN SHOW..."
Los Angeles Times - Kenneth Turan (11/21/2008)

"[F]risky, funny and inventive enough to engage the attention of grown-ups as well as children....What keeps BOLT fresh is an unaffected exuberance, a genuine sense of fun, that is expressed above all through obsessive attention to craft."
New York Times - A. O. Scott (11/21/2008)

"[A] blithe, digitally animated doggy comedy as zippy as its name....It's a sturdy beaut." -- Grade: A-
Entertainment Weekly - Lisa Schwarzbaum (11/28/2008)

4 stars out of 5 -- "[A]n end credits duet between Smiley and the Trav offers an effective summation of the flick's winning combo of old and new."
Total Film - Neil Smith (02/01/2009)

3 stars out of 5 -- "It opens with a thrilling installment of cute puppy dog Bolt's action-packed TV sereies...It's THE TRUMAN SHOW with a four-legged Jim Carrey."
Empire - Helen O'Hara (03/01/2009)

"[The directors] keep things moving along at a pleasant visual clip....There's a terrific tenderness in Travolta's performance, while Cyrus and company are similarly effective..."
Hollywood Reporter - Michael Rechtshaffen (11/13/2008)

Great Pixar Animation and Characters

Created: 18/04/09
Ok, so I bought this movie for my dogs. Yes, they love anything with animals in it. However, I did enjoy the film and thought that the Pixar animation was great. Miley Cyrus stars in this movie as a little girl who plays Penny, an actress in the TV Show Bolt. I thought that all the animal characters were great as well, (Hamster, kitty, birds,).

Although Bolt discovered that he was actually tricked into thinking that he had super powers, (Super bark, ability to bend wires, travel through walls, etc...) he was a rescue puppy that lived and believed his TV life was the real world.

This is considered a good or average movie in my opinion. A good story line for the most part and a bit too much violence (Green eyed evil man) for smaller children. Best suited for children over the age of seven. My dogs watched some of it and one slept through most of it. Oh well...

An Instant Animated Classic

Totally enjoyable. It's cute, it's funny, it packs the right punches at the right times and it is definitely original in countless ways. Very clever storyline from Walt Disney's animated team which doesn't always happen. Specifically, most of the time they produce more movies kids like than the whole family likes but Bolt was actually a few steps behind something of a Pixar-make (believe it or not). John Travolta did a good enough job of changing his voice accents so that he wasn't immediately recognized and I liked that. Miley Cyrus supplies a wanting for tween girls to attend but in reality has some 12 minutes of air time. Thankfully. Bolt made my list of favorite CGI films without much of a fight.

Bolt DVD 2009

Created: 07/09/10
This is a GREAT movie for all ages. Bolt is a canine action movie star who learns how to be a real dog from an unlikely sassy cat while trying to find his way back home to his soul mate co-star Penny. The animation is beautiful and the characters are so appealing. The voices of John Travolta and Miley Cyrus round this movie out to Five Stars for a real family favorite!

Dog on the Run Fun

Created: 02/10/10
My two sons, 7 & 9, and I loved it! Great story line of a movie star dog that doesn't realize that he is just an actor. Bolt (voiced by John Travolta) thinks he has x-ray vision, a super bark and incredible strength. It's not until he finds himself far from home, that he realizes that he is an ordinary dog. With the help of a street wise cat and a Bolt-fan hamster, our hero finds his way home and realizes that being an ordinary dog can be one of the sweetest joys in life!

Movie not intended for the little ones..

Created: 14/04/09
I bought this with the hopes of adding another cute movie to our 2 1/2 year olds collection to watch from time to time.. hearing great reviews from friends, I thought it would be a hit. What a disappointment.. perhaps for the older ones, but for our 2 1/2 year old we found ourselves fast forwarding through the first half hour of the movie.. so much violence.. granted, it was supposed to be the plot of a t.v. show, where the bad guy tries to get Penny, the little girl and her dog Bolt.. but shooting guns, things blowing up, men trying to electrical shock Penny, it was aweful.. but we fast-forwarded with hopes it would get better, which it did when Bolt was on his own in search of his dear human Penny, but then towards the end you are back to some more violence.. my son did enjoy the gentle parts with Bolt interacting with the cat and the various birds throughout the movie, but having to had fast-forward thru practically half the movie, i could never recommend it to someone with little children.. i can't say we'll watch it again.
