Movie trailer and editorial reviews

"[A]n intense, surprisingly serious study of a man making his way through a wilderness of catastrophic destruction and human cruelty like a latter-day prophet."
Hollywood Reporter - Kirk Honeycutt (01/10/2010)

3.5 stars out of 5 -- "Directing team The Hughes Brothers have chosen ELI as their first film in nearly a decade and though it certainly delivers all the fireworks you might come to expect from their earlier work, its religious undertones separate it from the pack..."
Box Office - Pete Hammond (01/14/2010)

"The Hughes brothers have a vivid way with imagery here, as in their earlier films....The film looks and feels good, and Washington's performance is the more uncanny the more we think back over it."
Chicago Sun-Times - Roger Ebert (01/13/2010)

"A lean, stark, surprisingly effective headliner in Hollywood's ongoing apoc-a-pala-looza."
Los Angeles Times - Michael Phillips (01/15/2010)

"An attractively grizzled Denzel Washington plays the enigmatic Eli, a true believer with quasi-mystical fighting skills..."
USA Today - Claudia Puig (01/18/2010)

"[Washington] beautifully inhabits the film's titular hero, a laconic, solitary gunslinger who's also a custodian of a mysterious tome..."
Washington Post (01/15/2010)

"One of the clever conceits of the script by first-time Gary Whitta is that there are only a handful of people still alive who remember how things were 'before'..."
Variety - Todd McCarthy (01/10/2010)

"THE BOOK OF ELI takes the form of an ultra-violent graphic novel, with Washington as a steely Man With No Name type who cuts a righteous path through the gullets of sinners and savages." -- Grade: B
A.V. Club - Scott Tobias (01/14/2010)

"[A]mong films about material scarcity, religion and power, it compares favourably with THERE WILL BE BLOOD."
Sight and Sound - Henry K. Miller (03/01/2010)

"The real draw is the spaghetti western homages, Tom Waits bartering goods and hand grenades being 10-pin bowled under trucks."
Total Film - Jamie Russell (05/24/2010)

Great end of the world story

Created: 15/06/10
Denzel Washington (Training day) teams up with Gary Oldman (The Dark Knight) in this post-apocalyptic thriller about survival in America and one man's journey to protect the "book" that may hold the key to the survival of the human race.

This is a great end of the world story and the acting is above average. The team of Oldman and Washington hit a high mark on this one as they are both at their best and the conflict between the two is outstanding.

Also starring in this movie are: Jennifer Beals, Mila Kunis, Malcom McDowell and Ray Stevenson

The movie is rather violent and while there is no nudity there are suggestions of sexual conduct that would be difficult for adults to explain to younger viewers. So digression would be advised on allowing those under age to view this movie.

If you like end of the world stories then get his movie, it would make a great addition to any DVD collection.

The good book

Created: 08/11/10
Reminiscent of Mad Max and a Spaghetti western. Good, bad, and ugly people on their own paths. It begins and ends with a nomadic feel. I liked the dry and desolate look of the scenery..surreal. The house shootout scene had a great eerie gothic vibe to it. Denzel is pretty good at playing a mystery man, and Oldman is nice as the potential corrupt preacher. Mila Kunis is really great, even if she is way too beautiful to be depicting a servant girl in a ravaged world where even shampoo is hard to come by. The surprise ending did make the movie better from top to bottom and I can't say I saw it coming. You will like this movie if you take pride in faith and redemption. You will love this movie if you especially enjoy bullying thugs getting massacred OR have a crush on ultra-gorgeous Mila.

Real good GREAT CAST. GOOD STORY GREAT TWIST!

Created: 03/08/10
30 years after the flash, a man named Eli walks across the desert. He is dressed in tattered rags and well-worn shoes. Above him, bomb-blasted freeways dead end in piles of rubble and exposed girders. A dying car battery powers the last iPod on Earth, the final notes of music in a world devoid of life or color. In his bag, beside the shotgun and long-blade, is a book. The only book that matters. And in a lawless town of mindless marauders, a civilized man named Carnegie has been searching for that book for a long, long time.

The book is the Bible the last one since the war saw them all hunted down and burned. ELI is sheparding the Bible across America with divine intervention to deliver him to its purpose. That said, he also an apocalyptic bad-ass who can takes down a gang of rapists and thieves with a single blade or winout in a gunfight against 25 fully-loaded shooters. The Punisher and Dear Devil can eat their hearts out!!! He's not much of a talker and the biggest challenge in the role is to maintain a quiet and believable presence throughout this movie (-: (so-so)

Most of the dialogue belongs to Carnegie. He is a more complex character than Eli, with occasional notes of sympathy and suggesting a past that might render him more than just a one-view villain.

There's violence, story line both PROFOUND, yet simple. PAY ATTENTION! There's a twist at the end that will blow your mind! Get the movie on ebay for $10 and under, you got a deal!

Highly recommended movie

Created: 12/07/10
Now let me first start by saying that i am a huge Denzel fan. I have seen virtually every movie that he has done and this is by far one of my favorites. This movie starts off with action and intrigue from the very beginning of the film. The excitement continues throughout and doesn't stop until the ending credits. Denzel Washington's performance was monumental in this movie. One of his best roles yet (rivaling "Creesy" in Man on Fire). The ending had me on pins and needles. Everyone in this film delivered a great performance. I would highly recommend this movie to anyone, except for children, of course. Do yourself a favor and see Book of Eli. I rented it first and I liked it so much that I bought the very next day.

The Book of Eli (DVD)

Created: 28/06/10
This DVD was recommended by a few friends. The director presents his main character as a mysterious traveler in a severely ravaged post-war planet. This character is quick to defend what he carries, a Book of significant value. The Book is one-of-a-kind, left from the time before the great war.
Some of the characters he meets on his trek, are the typical "Road Warrior"
riff-raff that seems to be in every post-apocalyptic film. However the surprising twist at the end of the film, makes it worth watching.
I am also a big fan of Denzel Washington.
