"A Case Of You" was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Arrangement Accopanying A Vocalist.Joni Mitchell is no stranger to jazz, as evidenced by her work with the legendary bassist and composer Charles Mingus toward the end of his life. On her 20th album, Mitchell forgoes the outer reaches of Mingus's jazz in favor of interpreting more traditional American vocal pop. By interpreting material normally associated with Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald, the Canadian iconoclast travels down the same road as her old pal Linda Ronstadt. Unlike Ronstadt's mid-'80s three-album foray with Nelson Riddle into the great American standards songbook, Mitchell approaches this project on a more personal and conceptual level, as she traces the arc of a modern romantic relationship.Backed by the billowy sounds of the London Symphony Orchestra, Mitchell's burnished vocals provide a perfect match as she goes from discovering love ("At Last") to seeing it begin to crumble ("Sometimes I'm Happy") and ultimately collapse ("Stormy Weather"). Jazz greats Wayne Shorter and Herbie Hancock add some bite to the lush orchestrations. Mitchell weaves a personal touch into the conceptual framework by including a radically altered version of her own "A Case of You" and "Both Sides Now." BOTH SIDES NOW provides a haven for pop-vocal fans whose definition of the genre begins and ends with Sinatra.

Editorial Reviews
6 out of 10 - ...reeks of bohemian opulence....The arrangements are fluent reconstructions of a bygone sound and under such heavy manners Mitchell sings like a singer for the first time in her career....Nice enough...
NME

...Vocals wreathed in grey-blue cigarette smoke, she follows the arc of a love affair in 12 exquisitely sequenced episodes....in her maturity those old songs of hers...are closer than ever to the terrain that great performers occupy.
Mojo

...Somber, soulful readings of 12 romantic standards....retaining much of her lonely storyteller's charm, keeping her...readings honest and heartfelt while the myriad instruments swoon behind her...
JazzTimes (20000501)

4 stars out of 5 - ...Mitchell moves gracefully through 12 standards....the songs are perfectly executed....singing with thought-provoking resonance.
Q (20000401)

...one of America's most respected singer-songwriters rents an orchestra and tries her hand at some standards....It's tough to argue with the spirit of the set, a song cycle tracing the arc of love gone wrong... - Rating: B
Entertainment Weekly (20000211)

3 stars out of 5 - ...[She] sings atop a velvety orchestra, sounding buoyant one minute and betrayed the next....she's telling these stories with a repertoire of gingerly placed inflections and anguished sighs, tools she's always had but never flaunted.
Rolling Stone (20000316)

BOTH SIDES NOW-JONI MITCHELL-2000

Created: 10/10/08
Magnificent recording -strings and a singing voice that recalls the decca recordings of Billie Holiday and the ballads of a bluesey Cleo Laine -I had no idea Joni Mitchell made a recording like this - I always had a pre judgement of a guitar and folk thing- but don't judge-this is a voyage into the 1940's and 1950's romance era of love found and love lost -Joni revamps her own compositions -case of you and both sides now masterfully also memorable are- -your my thrill-stormy weather-comes love -answer me my love-at last-I wish I were in love again...
I love listening to this cd from start to finish ...
astonishing arrangements and relaxing Mark Isahms solo- a masterpiece to behold and it deservedly won grammys - 10 out of 10 !

Boring

Created: 06/02/10
Sorry, but this an extremely below average CD for such a talented singer songwriter, and I really like Joni in general. Almost every song follows the same flat performance style, and the only one that shows some spark of life is Both Sides Now. But if you're feeling depressed and want to stay that way, this may be for you....amazing that this was Grammy material.

Not the same Joni

Created: 24/03/10
This is not the same Joni Mitchell that I loved in the 60s. Her music has gone more to heavily orchestrated pieces and none of the energy her music once possessed. The songs are tired - the one piece that could have been salvaged was "Both Sides Now", but it failed to even rise to mediocre.

Damned shame. Always loved her songs.

Sultry, Unexpected Delight

Ms Mitchell has a great voice and with these standards she shows how good she is... I heard Stormy Weather when I was abroad and I couldn't believe it was her... all the other songs are good and this CD has become one of my favorites.
