A Rather Kinky Tale of Survival...
Created: 01/09/06
yes, that is actually the tag line. I saw this movie a couple of years ago and wondered - why had I not heard of this movie before??!!!! It is brilliant, funny and has a young & yummy Don Johnson, you know before he became icky Don Johnson.
Set in the post-nuclear future where food and women are scarce. Don Johnson (who plays Vic) and his dog Blood communicate telepathically. When the boy meets a girl and follows her to her underground hometown he becomes a baby-making machine. Seems that there is a fertility problem down under. At first it seemed like a great gig for Vic but soon he misses his freedom - and his dog. So he plans an escape and the girl he originally fell for follows. That is not were it ends, but it is were I stop because I don't want to spoil anything.
Excellent movie adapted from a Harlan Ellison novella, great performances, funny, smart and clever all the way through. If you like sci-fi, post-nuclear/apocalyptic movies this one is for you!

A Boy and His Dog

The movie starts out with a young Don Johnson, before he starred in Miami Vice. The character that Don plays is a young, late teen boy, looking for food and women after World War 5. His companion is a dog that can talk to his mind. Most of the landscape is barren, with sand and a few falling down buildings. His dog friend uses its' nose to find can goods buried in the sand, and also warns him of danger, which is all around him. The dog and the boy ague back and forth, which adds humor to an otherwise view of a bleak future.
The movie is so unusual that you must see it to believe it.
My 2 sons and husband enjoyed the movie also.
Probably no one under 13 should see it.

For those familiar with Harlan Ellison's Nebula Award-winning novella "A Boy And His Dog", this DVD movie is a bitter-sweet mixture. The sweetness? -A very young and talented Don Johnson, his comical dog guardian and mentor, Ellison's edgy dialogue and post-apocalyptic brutal action, and a very well-portrayed retelling of the original story during the first half, and at the end. The bitterness? -The bizarre treatment of the action whilst in the Topeka Downunder. Much of what takes place in the Downunder however, while it's in the surreal spirit of the original storyline, it takes some weird broad departures from the original sequence of events. And I feel that hurts the overall film. I sincerely feel sticking with the original text and not taking the bizarre artistic license that was taken in that part of the film would have made it 5 stars instead of 4. I see that the screenplay was credited to Harlan Ellison, but I am hard-pressed to truly believe that he would hack-up that portion of his gleaming masterpiece in that way - unless he got into a serious batch of bad mushrooms. Outside of that odd turn, though, this portrayal of Ellison's excellent sci-fi tale definitely bears watching - at least once for pete's sake. In its own right, it is a treasure. -Like a 5-carat ruby with near-perfect color and clarity -with a spot in the middle of it. Too good to dismiss or ignore.
So come on, Albert, buy me some popcorn! You promised me popcorn.

Way cool science fiction film.
Released in 1975.
The boy goes by the name Vic.
His dog goes by the name Blood.
You need to see it when Vic goes underground, to a subterain underworld.
Far out-check it out, right now!

This is science fiction presented in the only way I can stomach the genre: mixed in with a lot of social commentary. Decent acting and a superb script written by Harlan Ellison transports the viewer to a STRANGE post apopalyptic world where, well, dogs and pussy still rule. As the lead character knows, always choose the dog over pussy. A good dog is harder to replace.
