Publisher's Note
Based on the public television series of the same name, Bradshaw On: The Family is John Bradshaw's seminal work on the dynamics of families that has sold more than a million copies since its original publication in 1988. Within its pages, you will discover the cause of emotionally impaired families. You will learn how unhealthy rules of behavior are passed down from parents to children, and the destructive effect this process has on our society.

Using the latest family research and recovery material in this new edition, Bradshaw also explores the individual in both a family and societal setting. He shows you ways to escape the tyranny of family-reinforced behavior traps--from addiction and co-dependency to loss of will and denial--and demonstrates how to make conscious choices that will transform your life and the lives of your loved ones. He helps you heal yourself and then, using what you have learned helps you heal your family.

Finally, Bradshaw extends this idea to our society: by returning yourself and your family to emotional health, you can heal the world in which you live. He helps you reenvision societal conflicts from the perspective of a global family, and shares with you the power of deep democracy: how the choices you make every day can affect--and improve--your world.

Eight years after the initial publication of BRADSHAW ON: THE FAMILY, John Bradshaw revisits his seminal work on the dynamics of families. The information that Bradshaw first shared with readers is still powerful today: 96 percent of all families are to some degree emotionally impaired. One generation passes the unhealthy rules many people live by down to another, & ultimately these rules seep into society. Our families are sick because we live by these inherited rules; our society is sick because our families are sick. In this updated edition, Bradshaw moves beyond these facts & again breaks new ground. Using the latest family research & recovery material, he examines the individual in both a family setting & a societal setting. He explores ways to escape the tyranny family - reinforced behavior traps, & shows readers how to make conscious choices that will transform their lives & their loved ones. They can heal their families, just as they heal themselves. Bradshaw then takes readers to the next level: by healing themselves & their families, they can heal the world in which they live. By reenvisioning societal conflicts from the perspective of a global family, readers will learn the power of deep democracy - how the choices we make every day can affect, & improve, our world.

I bought this book because my counselor was told by a colleague that it was a good book to use in therapy. My counselor and I now make jokes about how awful this book was !

There are several levels of awfulness to this book:

1) Bradshaw is a big fan of using multisyllabic psychobabble to make you think he knows what he is talking about. So try this - pick out one paragraph in the book, and go through sentence by sentence, and translate it to everyday English. To your shock and dismay you will discover he isn't actually saying anything. I'd give you an example here of a translation, but frankly I threw the book away (it's not even worth donating).

2) I've read and used many therapy books on families that are so much easier to understand, offer much better insight into families, and have much better advice on how to explore issues and figure out how to handle them. Just because you have to work hard to read this book doesn't mean it has better advice. About 90% of the books I've read and used in counseling are superior to this book. As far as I am concerned this book does not offer any therapeutic value (and my counselor agrees with me).

3) It takes about 2 pages to get totally tired of Bradshaw's superior attitude. Being in counseling is hard enough. Bradshaw is really condescending and without compassion. You'd be better off using a book that has good information and confronts issues head-on without the power trip attitude. Too bad he doesn't give advice on how to deal with a person like himself!

4) Bradshaw does not help you take his (bad) insights and advice and apply it to your own life. Many therapy books have companion workbooks and such to help you do this, or at least guides within the book to help you connect what you are learning with your own life. It's not enough to develop insights into what is going on; to get better you actually need to apply what you learn. So in the end you can't really DO anything with Bradshaw's book - it never reaches beyond feigned intellectualism to actually help you deal with your life.

So, BE NICE TO YOURSELF AND DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK!!!! Instead, help yourself by buying a book by Cloud, Townsend, Allender, Dobson, or any of the other great therapist-writers who combine great (and better) insight, clear steps to work through issues, and compassion.

I love this book because it gives insight into various aspects of family life that may lead to disfunction resulting in depression, rage and even addiction.
It was a great aide in adding to the recovery of various family members. It helped me to realize what leads me to behave the way I do and helped me to change my behavior.
It showed me how even minor influences during my childhood have effected me as an adult. I have become a much better mother and person as a result.
My life has changed drastically.
I purchased the book to give it to others to help them as John Bradshaw has helped me.

I got a lot out of this book. I think it is fascinating reading. Understanding oneself starts with understanding your family of origin and this book addresses that very well.
