Bram Stoker's Dracula (Blu-ray Disc, 2007)

Francis Ford Coppola, Gary Oldman, Winona Ryder|Theatrical release: 1992 | Rating: R (MPAA)

Movie synopsis

A seductive retelling of the legendary tale, BRAM STOKER'S DRACULA is Francis Ford Coppola's opulent, erotic, blood-filled feast. Count Dracula (played with irresistible intensity by Gary Oldman) reunites with his soul mate, Mina (Winona Ryder), after four centuries. Mina's friend Lucy (Sadie Frost) succumbs to the deadly bite of Dracula while Renfield (Tom Waits), locked in an asylum, eagerly waits for his master's return. Mina's fiancé, Jonathan Harker (Keanu Reeves), with the help of the eccentric Professor Van Helsing (Anthony Hopkins), attempts to save Mina's life and soul before she can become Dracula's eternal bride. After Dracula attacks Mina's friend Lucy (Sadie Frost), Dr. Jack Seward (Richard E. Grant) calls in the legendary Professor Van Helsing (Anthony Hopkins) to cure Lucy's "disease of the blood." Jonathan escapes from the castle and he and Mina are married while Lucy dies and is resurrected as a vampire. When Dracula appears to Mina in her sleep, she declares her undying love for him. Professor Van Helsing, Jack Seward, and Lucy's fiancé, Arthur Holmwood (Cary Elwes), join Jonathan and travel to Transylvania to destroy Dracula, but Mina tries to save her tortured lover.Musician Tom Waits appears in the film as Renfield, a Victorian lunatic singing the praises of Dracula. Ornate costume design and lighting awash in shades of blood make this film a seductive and scary must-see. In his version of the oft-told tale, Francis Ford Coppola takes Bram Stoker's archetypical horror story and accentuates the romantic angle. Blood still flows in large amounts, and Coppola opted to do all the eye-pleasing visual effects in-camera, utilizing shadow puppets, smoke, miniatures, and other time-honored tricks of the trade--creating a visual style not unlike that of a storybook come to life.

A Dracula with more romance than bite!

Created: 12/11/09
Francis Ford Coppola took a different approach to Dracula by making him a sympathetic character looking for his lost love; Elizabeta. There is the requisite gore and horror and excellent special effects without CGI based on the fact that this was made in the 90's. Gary Oldman's performance as Dracula is the centerpiece, but gets less credible support from the supporting actors; Keanu Reeves, Winona Ryder, and others The only other standout is Anthony Hopkins as Van Helsing. The art direction is unusual, but effective (you might be put off by Dracula's Granny Wig) and the oriental influence to his costumes. The Blu ray transfer is excellent, but the audio is only Dolby 5.1; not remastered to the newer HD audio formats. Still an entertaining film, and well worth owning if you're into this genre.

Copolla Brings Life Back into the Dracula Tale

Created: 21/10/10
Bram Stoker's Dracula is probably the best modern version of the original book, not just in its loyalty to the original text, which was done in the 20's by F.W. Murnau's film Nosferatu, but by adding elements to make it work as a movie. The "original" Dracula portrayed by Bela Lugosi was an interesting, charismatic yet still terrifying character that all but associated sex appeal to vampires. However, by adding the backstory, drawn from mythology about Vlad Tepes, the man Stoker loosely based his character on, Dracula becomes more of a tragic figure than some monster intent on destroying London from the inside. It's also a good way to brush up on the original (if you don't want to read, which your probably should) before two movies come out in 2011-2012, one called "Vlad" which is a historical action thriller that will tell the true tale of the man who was Vlad Tepes, and the other called "Dracula Year Zero," starring Sam Worthington which mixes mythology, history, and hopefully action. We'll see which is better.

Best Dracula ever!!!

Created: 06/10/08
This movie is simply a masterpiece! From beginning to end it keeps you locked into the story by focusing on Count Dracula and by delving deep into the passion and internal warfare that drives him. Leaps and bounds beyond your typical vampire movie, it forces you to rethink your position on one of the most sinister villains in movie history. Although still completely evil and in this movie beautifully creepy, at times you can actually feel great sympathy for the Count Dracula character. It doesn't end with the Count Dracula character however, the movies visuals are creepy and beautiful as well, and the same goes for the score, gothic and captivating. This is one of Gary Oldman's best performances, his acting is incredible with his signature passion and commitment to his character. I only wish I could say the same about some of the other actors in this film. I do have to say however that what is great about this film definitely outweighs the bad and I consider this to be one my favorite films of all time.

Good classic vampire movie with great acting.
Gary Oldman and Winona Ryder with a young Keanu Reeves(not great but ok) and Anthony Hopkins deliver.

Perhaps the best Vampire story ever!

Created: 26/01/08
In Blu Ray format this disc delivers deep colors, exceptional audio dynamic range and superb cinematography. A traditional telling of the king of the undead features outstanding performances of big names with Gary Olson delivering the best Dracula performance since Bela Lugosi. Not to be missed!
