THE BRASS VERDICT: 2 Great Characters, 1 Great Whodunit

    Created: 10/11/08
What's not to love about a mystery wherein one of the minor characters has his custom surfboards sold on eBay to raise money for his legal bill?

eBay references aside, this is a terrific read from front cover to back. In "The Brass Verdict", author Michael Connolly brings back sobriety-challenged attorney Mickey Haller (hero of "The Lincoln Lawyer") and teams him up with his other series hero, L.A.P.D. Detective Hieronymus "Harry" Bosch. There is a special surprise in store for both of them by the end of the book, but I don't want to give it away here and spoil it for you.

A prominent attorney has been murdered, and Mickey Haller has inherited all of his cases. This is a great windfall, because Haller is just starting back to work again post-rehab. But the catch is that one of them, involving the murders of a legendary studio head's wife and her lover, is just two weeks away from putting the studio head on trial for double homicide. It's being called The Case Of The Decade, but it may end up being the case of Haller's life -- and death.

Luckily, Harry Bosch also is on the case. And, mysteriously, so is the FBI. While Haller works to pull together a successful defense for his celebrity client, he also ends up working with Bosch to find the original attorney's killer -- even though it may include using Haller as bait. With lots of twists and turns along the way right down to the very last page, you are sure to enjoy this fast-paced whodunit both as a thriller and as a character study.
