While the dance-pop and adult contemporary ballads on that record were fresher than the music on AmIdol, Clarkson still hadn't escaped the show's shadow entirely: since it was a hit so close to her time on TV, it was easy to pigeonhole her as simply a creation of television, not a popular singer in her own right. So, her second album, Breakaway, released late in 2004, was a pivotal moment for her, a chance to prove that she was not a one-hit wonder, a chance to prove that she could have a real, vibrant career. Happily, Breakaway delivers on that promise. This time around, the dance-pop elements have been almost entirely stripped away, and the record instead is a rock-influenced, MOR pop affair, not entirely dissimilar to Ashlee Simpson's Autobiography, only a little bit smoother and not as heavy on guitars. Since Clarkson is a better singer than Simpson -- not only does she possess more chops, but she has more on-record charisma -- she can sell the material even when the slow tempos in the middle of record drag its momentum; she prevents the songs from sounding too samey. While there may be one too many ballads here, they often are very good and sometimes are excellent, like the light, layered, yearning title tune. Clarkson may be a fine ballad singer, but what gives Breakaway its spine are the driving, anthemic pop tunes like "Since U Been Gone," "Walk Away," and "You Found Me." These are the numbers that sound simultaneously mainstream and youthful, which is a hard trick to pull off, and they are the tracks that illustrate that Kelly Clarkson is a rare thing in the 2000s: a pop singer who's neither hip nor square, just solidly and enjoyably in the mainstream. After a bunch of rather blah mainstream pop albums, including a glut of half-baked AmIdol projects, this is a nice, low-key relief.

Clarkson is back and very Angry!

Created: 22/09/05
Kelly Clarkson makes you forget about her mediocre debut Thankful by cranking up the angst. By leveraging production from the likes of Max Martin (Nsync, Backstreet Boys, Britney Spears) and Ben Moody (Evanescence). The first single Breakaway serves as a proper warm up to a record that is chalk full of angst and emotion. The album came as a shock I'm sure to most fans expecting an American Idol pop sing along. From the slamming drums of Since You've Been Gone to the loneliness of I Hate myself for Losing You we see a Kelly that is much more mature and who bares much more of her soul.

The album has already spawned 3 chart topping singles. Breakaway written by Avril Lavigne came out last summer as the theme for Princess Diaries 2 and refused to leave radio. Soon that was followed by Since You've Been Gone which was Max Martin's return to the production spotlight following the collapse of boy bands and their popularity in the United States. As the charts will show he didn't miss a beat. The song became a chart topper in America during Holidays of 2004. Following Since You've Been Gone was Behind These Hazel Eyes which received many accolades for Kelly being a co-writer on the project and for the songs crossover appeal. All of this has culminated to Breakaway being the fifth-best-selling album of the year, according to SoundScan. It was also just certified triple platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America and has remained in the top 20 of the Billboard albums chart every week since it was released on November 30, 2004.

Kelly Clarkson: Definitely Broken Away

Created: 01/07/06
For her sophomore project Kelly Clarkson has broken away and shown that she's a true pop-rock idol. Compared to her debut CD, "Thankful", "Breakaway" has much more memorable tunes and seems to show more of who Clarkson is, rather than who the label wants her to be. She's maintained her mainstream marketability with the title track playing a major role in the Disney film "The Princess Diaries." But with edgey songs like "Behind These Hazel Eyes" and "Because of You" Clarkson has shown that she can pump out music with real feeling, emotion, and story. And if any of you have heard the song and seen the video for "Walk Away" you'll agree that Kelly has proven herself to be a sexy, fun, soulful diva. She's got a long career ahead of her and "Breakaway" is just the beginning. Get this CD, and get it fast!

Kelly Clarkson breaks away on sophomore effort!

Created: 29/12/05
Very few albums of 2004 have hold their replay value like Kelly Clarkson's sophomore effort Breakaway. From the wistful title track to the Benatar flavored finisher "Hear Me" she really give her all to each and every track. She has really come along way from her genre sampling debut. (Even though that was a pretty good album in it's own right) I decided to buy it after a couple of listens on Napster because many of the songs just grabbed me. For example, Because of You holds a lot of power discussing a legacy of being desperate and miserable. Since You've Been Gone is an infectious kiss-off. Although every single is high caliber some of the album tracks that haven't been released are phenomenal as well. One of my favorites is the dramatic and stunning "Addicted about a relationship which holds her captive like an addiction. I would say there is no bad song on the album. I definitely say this was one of the most satisfying mainstream albums of 2005.

Now Thats What I Call An Idol!

Created: 20/01/06
This is the best album to come out of the American Idol show in recent history. Conspicuously short of filler material, every song sounds like airplay material. "Breakaway" launches the album with a mighty kick and it never stops going from there, the grand finale "Beautiful Disaster" being anything but a disaster.

It's not hard to detect a little influence of Avril Lavigne on "Since U Been Gone" and "Behind These Hazel Eyes", and there's also a bit of Amy Lee, especially on "Addicted" and "Hear me" thrown in, but this impressive follow-up pushes Clarkson into the running for the best female pop album of the year.

Highly recommended for pop/rock fans.

Great CD in an Era of One Hit Wonders

Created: 06/01/06
It's not often that I come across a good pop rock CD and while I was hesitant to buy it at first, it's turned out to be great. Kelly has a good voice and vocal range. She sings with more passion in songs like "Because of You" which has both good lyrics and expression.

I've given each of the songs a personal rating.
