I bought "Breaking and Training the Driving Horse" because I want to learn to drive a pony and cart. There are so few books written on this subject. So I bought this book.
Parts of this book are more than I really need to know right now. Who knows, when I get more experienced, I will probably want to come back and read it again to learn more in depth.
I wish there were more pictures with the explainations. Yet, Doris Ganton verbally describes things well. (It was a little more difficult at first, until you catch on with the lingo... as with anything new.)
Doris Ganton is a pleasurable read with her sense of humor.
Doris Ganton does a wonderful job explaining all of the harness parts, what they are for, how they should be fitted to the horse the way the do, and why.
This book more applies to someone who has a horse they want to train to drive. However, I still learned a lot as to what "I" needed to know about driving that horse. For me, the training of the horse to do its job is for someone else more worthy of the job. I need to learn how to train myself to properly and safely apply those trainings together.
Still, I found it interesting what the horse goes through to be trained to become a Driving Horse.
The lady obviously writes with much experience and a great passion for her chosen sport with beloved horses. She covers all angles possible about Breaking and Training the Driving Horse.
I haven't found a more knowledgeable person who will take the painstaking efforts to share that knowledge with others in the form of writing such an inclusive book.

Basic Training for the Driving & Harness horse
Created: 16/11/07
81 pgs, 40 illustrations, many b/w photos.
A good basic starter book for training the driving horse. Covers the most common areas related to starting a horse in harness. Describes the proper names of the harness and carriage parts, which makes for a handy reference when dealing with harness makers and carriage makers.
Sweet: nicely done illustrations, concise overview, excellent descriptions of vehicles and harness, as well as a bits page. Low priced
Not so sweet: Somewhat dated (20+ years publication) Geared more towards a show ring than the average pleasure driver. Does not address problems that can occur with certain horses.

Excellent book with LOTS of information

This book is a beginning horse drivers "must have". It has photos and very informative drawings. The whole process of driving is explained from start to finish.
Although it is primarily aimed at large horses, it would work just as well for miniature horses.
The price was very reasonable.

I'm a disabled veteran, and a life-long horseman. I'm unable to ride as I once did, si I'm considering learning to drive my horses, so that I can enjoy them.
I find this book an axcellent resource. It is clear, easy to understand, and a tremendous aid to learning virtually every aspect of driving a horse.
I'm using this book because it was highly reccommended by others who are more experienced than I, in driving.
