Bridge to Terabithia (DVD, 2007, Anamorphic Widescreen)

Gabor Csupo, Josh Hutcherson, AnnaSophia Robb|Theatrical release: 2007 | Rating: PG (MPAA)

Movie synopsis

Animation master Gabor Csupo directs his first live-action film in this adaptation of the novel The Bridge to Terabithia, by Katherine Paterson, whose son David co-wrote the screenplay and serves as a producer. Jess (Josh Hutcherson) is misunderstood. Despite Jess' talents as an artist, the school bullies pick on him, his father (Robert Patrick) belittles his dreams, and his four sisters invade his space in the family's cramped house. Jess' bleak world changes when Leslie (Annasophia Robb) moves into the house next door. Bright, creative and outspoken, Leslie also finds herself an outsider in their school. Soon the two are thick as thieves, spending their after school hours exploring the woods beyond their backyards and on the others side of a creek, which Leslie deems the kingdom of Terabithia. Here, they create their own magical world, complete with a Dark Master and his minions, dragonfly soldiers, giant trolls and a treehouse fortress. In Terabithia, the two friends let their imaginations run wild and control their destiny, far away from school bullies and the pressures of adolescence.Hutcherson and Robb are well cast as Jess and Leslie in this coming-of-age tale. Hutcherson handles both the melancholy intensity and unbridled joy of his character beautifully, and Robb's smile and charisma are infectious. Zooey Deschanel also stars as Miss Edmunds, the music teacher who befriends Jess. Parents should read the book or learn more about the story before taking young children to see this film, as the story includes not only some scary creatures, but also the death of a young person. Terabithia and its creatures are created by WETA Digital LTD, the same company that did the effects for the LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy and KING KONG.

Bridge to Terabithia

We saw Bridge to Terabithia first at the theater & my 7 year old daughter loved it so now we've bought the DVD. I enjoyed it, but it was hyped to have lots of special effects like Narnia & I didn't feel they expanded on the make-believe part of it enough. They give you a taste at the very end, but you never really feel like you get to Terabithia. We haven't read the book yet, but will just to see how the movie compares & matches up. It is a very sweet story of friendship, acceptance, loss & dealing with bullies (at school & at home). The movie really is a good one for both kids & adults, I just left the theater wanting more...

Excellent family DVD

Created: 18/08/07
This DVD was purchased for my nine-year old daughter. The movie contains a combination of great coming of age and creative writing/art themes for children. My daughter watched it many times and was encouraged to read the book in two days. One thing I disliked about the movie was that it poorly attempted to add a few story lines from the book. If you read the book, you will see what I mean and enjoy some of Bridge to Terabithia's deeper meanings. That said, I believe it covered most of the book's story lines very well. This is a good family movie, but I must warn that one of the most important child characters dies near end of movie. I(a middle-aged male)cried as never before in a movie. Therefore, I suggest that children under eight years old or those who have extreme emotional reactions to tragedies either not watch it or only watch it with their parent or guardian.

Incredible and Powerful Film for the Whole Family

Created: 04/06/09
I may be few and far between with my feelings on this film but I enjoyed it much more than I enjoy your average family film. Annasophia Robb and Josh Hutcherson are almost guaranteed solid performances in the future and I'm excited to see them act as adults. The symbolism and aesthetic qualities of the story are outstanding. It's like I'm reading a classic piece of literature in school, I really think there's more to this film than a stupid 90 minute piece of entertainment parents throw their kids at.

Bridge to Terabithia Movie

Created: 03/08/07
My mom rented this movie for my eight-year-old "baby" sister and I to watch while she was at work. At first my sister, Mariah thought is was rather boring and dumb, but as the movie went on she started to like it. By the time she had finished the movie she was crying about Jess's loss and hit the remote to watch it again, this time with Mom. SHE END UP ABSOLUTELY LOVING IT!

I read the book two times, the first being in 6th grade and the second being in 8th grade. The movie stayed very much with the plotline of the book, unlike some movies. Ever watch a movie and decide to read the book later on only to find that book and movie had different plotlines? Frustrating and disappointing, isn't it!

I especially loved that this movie taught about accepting others' differences, friendship, courage, imagination, dealing with grief and bereavement (loss of a loved one), and respect. The special effects were absolutely wonderful and very cool, and added a surreal, imaginative yet realistic dimension to the movie. Everybody who worked on this film did an excellent job---very talented group! Yes, Jess's dad does use some "colorful language," but there is profanity in the book too. (Not that it makes it right or okay. In fact I actually went to my 6th grade teacher about the "bothersome language" when I read it for the first time.) For those who find swearing bothersome or offensive, you may want to edit out the "bad" language while watching this movie.

FUN FAMILY FILM FOR ALL AGES! HIGHLY RECOMMEND SEEING THIS ONE!
