    Synopsis
Hawking reviews the great theories of the cosmos and all the puzzles, paradoxes, and contradictions still unresolved. He explains Galileo's and Newton's discoveries and takes the reader through Einstein's general theory of relativity and on to quantum mechanics. Finally, he explores the worldwide effort to combine the two into a single quantum theory of gravity, the unified theory, which should resolve all the mysteries left unsolved.

    Publisher's Note
Stephen Hawking has earned a reputation as the most brilliant theoretical physicist since Einstein. In this landmark volume, Professor Hawking shares his blazing intellect with nonscientists everywhere, guiding us expertly to confront the supreme questions of the nature of time and the universe. Was there a beginning of time? Will there be an end? Is the universe infinite or does it have boundaries? From Galileo and Newton to modern astrophysics, from the breathtakingly cast to the extraordinarily tiny, Professor Hawking leads us on an exhilarating journey to distant galaxies, black holes, alternate dimensions--as close as man has ever ventured to the mind of God. From the vantage point of the wheelchair from which he has spent more than twenty years trapped by Lou Gehrig's disease, Stephen Hawking has transformed our view of the universe. Cogently explained, passionately revealed, A Brief History of Time is the story of the ultimate quest for knowledge: the ongoing search for the tantalizing secrets at the heart of time and space.

    Industry Reviews
"Stephen Hawking has overcome a crippling disease to become the supernova of world physics. Unable to write or even speak clearly, he is leaping beyond relativity, beyond quantum mechanics, beyond the big bang, to the 'dance of geometry' that created the universe."
    Vanity Fair - Timothy Ferris

A very good read. Opens up the universe to ordinary people who must become awe struck as they read. If they understand the material that is.The fact you are reading the words of a man who has been trapped in his lifeless body for decades makes this work even more awe inspiring!

What an monumental effort of work for anyone. To enclose the universe in a paperback. The mind that provides the descriptions and theories in this book is something to behold. Very well done Mr. H. Very nice indeed.

    A Brief History of time.

I'll never look up at the sky the same way again. Stephen's sense of simplicity as he explains the mysteries of the univers has uncloaked my eyes from a great unknown dimension I never thought that I would fully understand. His dual goal of personally understanding the Univers, space-time and his honest desire that all mankind could comprehend this marvelous physical realm is noble. A book worth reading. You'll understand how small and special we really all are.

    A brief History Of Time

I have read the book previously, and I just re-ordered the book so I would have a copy in my library (I do not know what happened to my original copy); and, while the book is interesting, I do not necessarily agree with some of Mr. Hawking's somewhat radical departures from some of Mr. Einstein's theories concerning black holes. Nonetheless, it does present interesting views that I have not found presented elsewhere, and I would definitely recommend reading the book as it is not lenghty nor overtly complex in the explanations.
