All tracks have been digitally remastered. The Blues Brothers: Elwood Blues (vocals, harmonica); "Joliet" Jake Blues (vocals); Matt Murphy, Steve Cropper (guitar); Tom "Bones" Malone (tenor saxophone, baritone saxophone, trumpet, trombone); Lou Marini, Tom Scott (tenor saxophone); Alan Rubin (trumpet); Paul Shaffer (Hammond b-3 organ, keyboards); Donald Gunn (bass guitar); Steve Jordan (drums). The Blues Brothers began as an affectionate joke-c**-tribute to R&B music, and taken in that spirit it retained its entertainment value, even after this live album topped the charts, sold two million copies, and produced hit singles in "Rubber Biscuit" and "Soul Man." The guardians of popular music have always been entirely too reverent and humorless, however, and it wasn't long before they were leveling charges of rip-off against the Brothers and complaining that John Belushi couldn't sing as well as Otis Redding. So what? No one seems to have noticed that Belushi was as obsessive about citing his sources as Frank Sinatra is about naming his arrangers -- you'd have thought those critics would have appreciated the footnotes. The beneficiaries of Belushi's encomiums didn't mind the increased exposure or the renewed royalty checks ("I suggest you buy as many blues albums as you can," Belushi told the audience), and even today, what comes across in these performances is the sincerity of feeling -- that and some tasty playing from a top-notch band. ~ William Ruhlmann

Briefcase Full of Blues - Blues Brothers

Created: 07/05/09
Recently, I was at a friend's house when the original Blues Brothers movie came on tv. He and his wife wondered why I got so excited, and I questioned if they had ever seen Blues Brothers? After getting over my shock of them saying "no", I proceeded to "google" and "wikpedia" all the Blues Brothers information I could gather for them.
It was then that I discovered this gem of an album- produced two years BEFORE the original movie was ever made(1978- the movie was in 1980). The main characters (John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd) we all know from the movie are the same on the album. Belushi and Aykroyd, respectively as lead vocalist "Joliet" Jake Blues and harpist/vocalist Elwood Blues are awsome, along with the rest of the band that appears in the movie.
The music is fun to listen to, with my favorite being "Soul Man", which actually hit #14 on the Billboard 100 chart.

Underappreciated album

This album was the Blues Brothers first album but it has always taken a back seat to their movie soundtrack (which is excellent). But this album has several classic, but lesser-known, cuts that are very good. "Soul Man" and "Rubber Biscuit" got the most play, but "Flip, Flop & Fly" and "B Movie Boxcar Blues" are two of several other good songs that show off the band's talents. "Messin' With the Kid" could have been left off, but other than that it's a very good album.
