Writer-director cinema at its utter best
Created: 25/07/08
This is a gem. A highly original and at every turn an intelligently shaped gem. And it's better each time you watch it. The setting is amazing, the score is haunting, the jokes are bolder and funnier and more frequent than any recent film can manage, and the core performances are Oscar-level acting. Brendan Gleeson is the unglamorous hit-man enraptured by the canals and buildings of the city of Bruges, Colin Farrell is the incompetent trainee, who's in Bruges after the botched assassination of a priest - over which he feels guilty because a little boy was shot in the course of the job - and he's so troubled he simply detests Bruges. One is protective, one is anarchic, and nothing is what it seems. Gradually new dimensions open up, most of them hopeful, but generally all too late. If you've already seen this in the cinema, the bonus of the dvd is a big handful of deleted scenes, which are often themselves very funny, and which further flesh out the doom-laden baggage from the past each of the protagonists is carrying.
Martin McDonagh is a risk-taker, who's put his high repute as a playwright on the the line, and won through. His brief appearances and comments in the dvd bonus material are mesmeric. It's an indictment of the film industry that there's not been writer-director cinema at this level of quality and independence since the emergence of Almodovar in 1980s Spain. In Bruges has broken through those barriers, and - like McDonagh's Oscar-winning short, Six Shooter - In Bruges looks like it's already heading for cult status. Buy it now!

The Best Film of 2008

In his first foray as a writer/director, Martin McDonagh has created a truly unique film. "In Bruges" follows two hitmen-Ray (Colin Farrell) and Ken (Brendan Gleeson)- who are ordered into hiding in the titular city. Farrell and Gleeson are equally brilliant throughout the film, packing their performances with humor and drama. Ralph Fiennes is excellent as the unpredictable, unhinged, hilarious crime boss who comes to Bruges to settle a score with his henchman. Another truly remarkable feature is the backdrop of Bruges itself. At one point in the story a character remarks that no classic film has ever been filmed in the city; she stands corrected after viewing this film.

If you are looking for that Pulp Fiction, Snatch, Boondock Saints sort of feel, this is it. This movie is takes place in Ireland and Belgium. Colin Farrell is hilariously funny as the hitman who made the ultimate mistake, killing a child. Overwhelmed with remorse, he is miserable, and cannot live with himself. His crime boss, Ralph Fiennes, gets a attack of morality, and wants him taken out for this atrocity. Brendan Gleeson is the co-worker, best friend to Farrell, who is asked to take on the task. The irony of the cold-blooded killers and their love for family, loyalty to friends, and unusual moral standards defines the splintered minds of the murder for hire business. You will also enjoy the appearance of Peter Dinklage in this movie, who always provides icing to your cake. Very dark and wonderful. You will not be disappointed.

I bought it because I had rented the movie and then wanted to own it. The cast is outstanding and the story line is a hilarious dark comedy, Colin Ferrell and Brendon Gleeson are great together in their roles. What can you say about Ralph Fiennes, he's one of the best actors of our time. Truly believable all the way around.

A wonderful movie, disturbing and hilarious at once. Brendan Gleeson is perfect, Colin Farrell disappears into a complicated role -- he just becomes the character completely. Bruges actually looks like a nice place to visit, despite it all. I loved the surreal "bosch" sequences at the end.
