Synopsis
Echoing CHRISTINE, an earlier novel about a homicidal car, this latest Stephen King tale delves into the psyche of a Buick Roadmaster locked up in the state police barracks. The car is suspected of having something to do with several people's disappearance. In a macabre coincidence, King suffered a near-fatal car accident upon completing the first draft, a point he discusses in the book's afterword.

Publisher's Note
The state police of Troop D in rural Pennsylvania have kept a secret in Shed B out back of the barracks ever since 1979, when Troopers Ennis Rafferty and Curtis Wilcox answered a call from a gas station just down the road and came back with an abandoned Buick Roadmaster. Curt Wilcox knew old cars, and he knew immediately that this one was...wrong, just wrong. A few hours later, when Rafferty vanished, Wilcox and his fellow troopers knew the car was worse than dangerous -- and that it would be better if John Q. Public never found out about it.

Curt's avid curiosity taking the lead, they investigated as best they could, as much as they dared. Over the years the troop absorbed the mystery as part of the background to their work, the Buick 8 sitting out there like a still life painting that breathes -- inhaling a little bit of this world, exhaling a little bit of whatever world it came from.

In the fall of 2001, a few months after Curt Wilcox is killed in a gruesome auto accident, his 18-year-old boy Ned starts coming by the barracks, mowing the lawn, washing windows, shoveling snow. Sandy Dearborn, Sergeant Commanding, knows it's the boy's way of holding onto his father, and Ned is allowed to become part of the Troop D family. One day he looks in the window of Shed B and discovers the family secret. Like his father, Ned wants answers, and the secret begins to stir, not only in the minds and hearts of the veteran troopers who surround him, but in Shed B as well....

From a Buick 8 is a novel about our fascination with deadly things, about our insistence on answers when there are none, about terror and courage in the face of the unknowable.

Suprisingly a Great Book!

Created: 21/10/05
Soon to be a major motion picture, this book produced more intial judgements than educated reviews when it first came out, reminding people of King's other classic novel Christine. But it is much, much more than that. Told in typical Stephen King fashion, the story takes place in present day, but past "events" are told leading up to the present day conclusion. A very "otherworldly" driven plot keeps you glued to its pages. Suprisingly enough the protagonist of the story is not an author or writer of some kind, but a lowly old town police department faced with unspeakable enough events. It's a really good book and you should give it a chance.

From a Buick 8

I don't listen to reviews of favorite authors before reading a book, and I hope you don't either. Most of the reviews for this particular King offering border on the "two thumbs down" to downright bad. That's not really fair. Compared to some of his classic works, Buick 8 may seem to be lacking in the in-depth character analysis and "bogeys you love to hate" subjects. However, on its own, it's an engaging and interesting read. King is still a top-notch storyteller, something that has absolutely nothing to do with the theme of his books as much as just the kind of writer he is. Meticulous, engaging, entertaining, and always down-to-earth, it's King's style of writing that I have always loved far beyond the "horror" genre it's invariably anchored in. If you like Stephen King, you will like this read.
I would suggest that you borrow it from your local library and read it first, to see whether or not it deserves a spot in your library.

For any Stephen King fan this is an excellent book. I actually purchased this for my husband, who is the big Stephen King fan and who reads most everything the man puts out. This books compares highly with an earlier work entitled Christine.
