Movie synopsis

BULLETPROOF MONK begins in the 1940s, as a Tibetan Buddhist monk, charged with protecting an ancient scroll, passes on his legacy to his pupil. As the student receives the power to safeguard the scroll, his aging process is halted and he gives up his name, only to be known as the Monk (Chow Yun-Fat). Suddenly, the monastery is raided by Nazis, led by the ruthless Strucker (Karl Roden). As they attempt to seize the relic, the Monk is shot and falls off a cliff, taking the scroll with him. However, six decades later, the Monk appears in America and crosses paths with Kar (Seann William Scott), a tough city kid with a talent for picking pockets. Together the unlikely duo must contend with the forces of the now-elderly Strucker, still determined to possess the mystical scroll. As Strucker's granddaughter, Nina (Victoria Smurfit), leads his thugs to track down Kar and the Monk, the two heroes receive help from the mysterious Jade (Jamie King).Based on the comic book of the same name, BULLETPROOF MONK is a lively action film that features elements of Buddhist philosophy and Hong Kong cinema. The movie allows the typically goofy Scott (star of the AMERICAN PIE films and DUDE, WHERE'S MY CAR?) to try out a more straightforward hero role. Meanwhile, Yun-Fat (CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON) shines as the nameless monk, exuding the same effortless charisma that made him a superstar in Asia. A fun buddy romp filled with martial arts, BULLETPROOF MONK joins the ranks of RUSH HOUR as an entertaining East-meets-West adventure.

Fun From The Beginning!

This is a movie everyone will love..Film begins with a fight between two Buddhist Monks as the younger Monk clearly wins a huge grin breaks out on the older Monks face..viewers get to watch as magic takes over and the young Monk is given the job of protector for an ancient scroll which in the wrong hands could spell disaster for the entire world and of course the wrong hands seeks it out..Film is not long enough in my opinion..filled with great fight scenes which call to mind the old Chinese/japanese b films..though not a b film in any way this Film is a edge of your seat adventure from beginning to end..Chow Yun-Fat and Seann William Scott are a joy to watch..how I hope this film has a sequal waiting in the wings..

Bulletproof Monk

I love this movie because there is no bad language or adult themes. Chow Yun Fat exudes gentleness and patience; humor and wisdom in this role. And while there are some very grueling fight scenes the end in this case justifies the means in that he is protecting something very valuable and worth protecting and does so with no more violence than is absolutely necessary. As a subtext, I got from the film that with each succesive protector the means to afford that protection must escalate in proportion to the forces bent of obtaining and misusing it. The dialogue is clever enough but it's the chemistry between Seann William Scott and Chow Yun Fat that drive the film. With a tip of the hat to one of my personal favorites, Mako. Sure it's escapist but this is a feel good movie anyone can enjoy. And this particular DVD was chock full of extras that added the much more to my enjoyment and understanding of the film.

Good for this type of movie - Enjoyable Chow Yun-Fat

Created: 06/02/08
I rated this movie good for what type of movie it is: a B-grade popcorn Kung-Fu flick. Campy wire-assisted action flick that keeps the action light hearted as East meets West and the villian is an aging Nazi. Chow Yun-Fat is very likeable & his moves are smooth & sylish. The DVD has a bunch of special features. If you like this type of movie you will plenty to enjoy in this, if goofy martial arts flicks are not your thing then don't waste your time, because this will just be another stupid action flick.

If this review helps you make your buying or not buying decision please rate my review. It lets me know what people are looking for in a review. Thanks!

This movie is sure to be a classic with the hero in it being the same guy that plays Stiffler in American Pie! Awesome movie with some great martial arts and lots of Jacki Chan style humor! I loved it!
