) Good lens for low price. AF is very fast and quiet. I'm using it only in AF mode. Sharpness is decent (not excellent). I agree that the Canon EF 100-300mm f/4.5-5.6 USM Lens provides reasonable optical quality in a wide focal length range with fast Ring USM autofocus for a reasonable price.

Rather heavy and large, but I knew that already, and confirmed it when camera mounting as I purchased it. Happy to say my entire Canon kit has circled the globe with me without a single hiccup (spare batteries tucked in every nook & cranny!); the pro models; my fearless and simply brilliant eos630; flashs units that freak people out with a red beam of light(!), and the last of the affordable, (made in Japan) quality heavy multi element glass lenses.
A dying breed most likely, as am I; but my eos 1's and om 1n's and om2n's
will always cause my storage drawers to overflow with shiny paper slices of life. At it's current price, buy it, hold it, mount it on your camera's metal lens mount (it better be!) and either digi or film, make yourself proud of your own unique ability to capture the magic.

An Oldie but a Goodie!!!

) This may be an older lens, and it may not have Image Stabilization, but for the money it is an excellent choice for a long zoom. With excellent Image Quality, Full Time Manual and pretty sold construction, it will work with cropped sensors or full ones.
Long Distance Up Close

If you are like me a lens over 210mm was never needed, until I tried this 100 - 300mm lens and saw for myself what I was losing out on. For long range nature photos on a tripod or in a steady hand this lens takes terrific photos. Now I do not have to sneek that close to game to get the best shot. I use all my tracking skills through out the year and always make the perfect shot. This lens has allowed me to shoot bear without getting to close to cause harm to the bear or to me. It has allowed me to shoot a herd of deer grazing in a field without my scent being detected. Great Lens

Superior lens, sharp at 5.6 aperture. At 300mm the Moon photo is perfect. Good price for this quality.
