Awesome must-have lens in every photographers bag!

Just the mechanics of this professional L series lens in itself makes it worth it for the avid photographer. The f/2.8 allows you to get the perfect shot even in low-light situations. This lens is recommended for anyone as a go-to wide angle zoom lens and stays on my Canon 40D 90% of the time. On a full frame model canon digital SLR this wide angle turns into a super wide angle lens for maximum full frame options.

This lens is perfect for anyone that has the ability to stand near their subject or just loves to take expansive landscapes. Being able to focus as close as 9 inches is perfect for close quarters and the 16mm focal length gets you as wide as you would need before going to a dedicated super wide angle prime.
Of course the lens has some issues but are expected in super wide angle. Distortions around the edges.
All in all, I've turned to this lens as my walk-around lens. I've been shooting with this focal length range for 3 years and love it. Having upgraded from the 17-35 L, this lens does perform just as well. It's nice to be able to squeeze out that extra MM in focal length.
No regrets getting this lens and I'd recommend it to anyone that likes landscape and scenery photography. If you don't see the big picture, you'd never buy this lens (pun intended).

Perfect Wide Angle / Zoom

If you can afford the MKII version of this lens, then go for it; but otherwise, if you're a HDSLR video shooter like I am, get this lens and save yourself a couple bucks. The image quality is vibrant and sharp and looks fantastic. Being able to stop down to F/2.8 at 16mm is fantastic, and the focal length is great too. I would highly recommend this for photography as well (as it is originally intended). It's a Canon L lens, my favorite one besides the 35mm F/1.4 prime.

great relatively low light lens
Created: 10/10/10
great lens. i got mine used and my only gripe about it is that it feels like there is a 'grain of sand' in the mechanism. it doesn't affect performance at all. i only notice it if i take the zoom to either extreme and then turn the focus ring further. if i keep the focus ring tuned to where the focus should be, i don't get that grainy sensation. i assume this is because i got the lens used and maybe something happened with the prior owner. but i still love the lens. it works great. the pics are super sharp. the f/2.8 aperture allows me to use it in the evenings or dark settings where i have to put my 24-105 f/4 to bed. its a great lens to use esp at dinner parties where the lighting is often low and everyone is grouped pretty close together. with this lens and my 50mm f/1.4 and ISO set to 6400 or 12800, i never need to deal with wash out and shadows from flashes.
