This is by far the best rated L series lens for the money. What I most like about it, is the fast lighting speed focus - the USM lens motor is awesome. Also the image stabilizer works great for long telephoto or dim light still shots. Please remember, it does not hold your subject still. For fast moving subjects like cars racing on a cloudy day or at night, indoor sports, or running animals in the woods, this lens will work on a higher ISO setting of 400, 800 or higher. Some prefer to use the F/2.8 lens, for low light action shots. This is the second time I purchased this lens, the first was without IS - image stabilization.
To sum it up, this is the quality lens you would want for everday shooting. If you have something special in mind like low light photography, this has it's limitations.

I bought the canon 70-200 L4 IS three weeks ago and was immediately impressed with the number of features available on this lens. Sure it is an expensive upgrade for what is almost certainly the same glass u this new generation dual mode IS is just stunning. Now I can use my 70-200 when before I had to put it away or get the tripod out and as we all know most of the time we tend to leave it at home or just plain forget to bring it out wiht us.
This lens is just simply superb and cannot see at this zoom range how it can be bettered. Colour, contrast, sharpness and lack of any of the common lens evils makes this a Canon top winner. Works great with the 1.4X extender too and with full AF and IS too on my EOS 40D. Woudl be interested to know if the 2x extender works with IS and/or AF with this lens.
So yes I have absolutely no regrets at the high cost of upgrading my old 70-200 non IS for this IS incarnation, it is now a fully useable lens and very much less OOF or camera shake pictures to bin.
Recent samples in my gallery for many of my photos taken since March this year.. Overall, I'd recommend the lens if you're on a budget.

Canon Zoom Telephoto EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM
Created: 25/03/10
I bought this lens about a week ago.
I really like the zoom range and sharp focus for moving objects. I photgraphy a lot of animal nature pictures and this camera has worked well so far. Another great plus is that it is relatively light. I also have the 24-105mm and 24-70mm L glass and they are more than double the weight.
I have a several Canon L series lens 6 in total currently and I would definitely recommend this lens.

This is an excellent value for money lens. It is light, compact and the build quality is very good. I am using this lens in conjunction with a Canon 1D MK11 and the picture quality is really pleasing with rich vibrant colours on show after taking a series of still life flower images. With regards to the zoom, the turning circle is just so neat and so user friendly when engaging different focal lengths. This is a real plus and minimum effort is required. This is the first lens that I have purchased for my 1D MKII and I am not disappointed.

WOW!!! Super sharp images. Handles beautifully. Smooth manual focus and zoom operation! My only complaint is that I didn't buy this lens sooner!
