Product Information
Many people think a telephoto camera lens is only useful for zooming in to take pictures of objects that are far from the camera. While that is for sure one of the most important uses, artistic use of a good telephoto lens such as the Canon L IS USM can aid in capturing some truly unique shots of wildlife and landscapes. Because it’s often carried around out in the field, this Canon camera lens has some special designs considerations built in. First, it’s lightweight and portable (26.8 oz). The addition of an optional tripod collar increases the total weight. The lens is both water and dust-proof and is compatible with other Canon cameras using the EF mounting. The Canon L IS USM is a high-performance zoom lens with an aperture of f/4 and USM (Ultrasonic Motor) auto-focusing that is both fast and quiet. The front lens element is stable and does not move during focusing so that filters can be attached if desired. Perhaps the most important design component for a telephoto camera lens used to capture images on the go is an image stabilizer. The one in this lens corrects for camera shake within 0.5 seconds of the shutter button being depressed halfway and can make corrections of up to four shutter speeds. The Canon L IS USM uses fluorite lens elements to help produce great resolution and contrast in the images. With a close-up focusing distance of 47.2-inches, this Canon camera lens is a good choice for amateur or professionals who want to take sharp and detailed images of objects from both near and far.

A Awesome lens for around $1300 Brand New...and one I recommend 100% for the Advanced Amateur and semi-Pro it has the best of both worlds a Decent price and Superior Picture quality plus 4-stop image stabilizer with 2 modes and also 2 focus modes that are very helpful for fast focus, (IS)Image Stabilized 4-stops).

Is it right for YOU??.... well that's a hard question but here are some key facts and situations that may help you decide...

Pros..
The best lens under $1300 Hands down, Superior Build Quality With Superior Image Quality Compared to all other (Non L Lenses)Weather sealed, quick Focus for tracking and catching even the most intense moments like birds flying, sports and any action even in lower light situations.

Cons..
Expensive, Bulky and kind of funny looking on Smaller EOS Cameras, Heavier then most Canon SLR Camera Bodies.

Compared to..??

There is not much to compare this Awesome lens to (At least Canon Branded anyway) But the Canon EF 70-200mm f/4 L USM (NON IS) at around $700 is a good 2nd choice but lacks any image stabilizer and has just a bit lower Image quality overall.

Canon EF 70-300/4-5.6DO{IS}...$1000+
This lens is no where near the Over All Quality as the 70-200.. f4(is) But it is like the Jack Of All Trades as far as canon lenses go in this zoom Category and at about the Same Price Point it does offer a Small size longer zoom range and some Good Quality Build as well as Above average image quality.

Serious pros Go for the (L)series lens Because life Doesn't stop and let us take the picture over again and every picture is unique and in some cases olny happen once in our lives I recommend this lens to you for 4 reasons... Image stabilizer 4-stops ,Superior Build Quality, Superior Image Quality and Very Quick Focus in almost any situation Because the one issue Even Photoshop CS Cant fix is a poorly Focused Image

This is by far the best rated L series lens for the money. What I most like about it, is the fast lighting speed focus - the USM lens motor is awesome. Also the image stabilizer works great for long telephoto or dim light still shots. Please remember, it does not hold your subject still. For fast moving subjects like cars racing on a cloudy day or at night, indoor sports, or running animals in the woods, this lens will work on a higher ISO setting of 400, 800 or higher. Some prefer to use the F/2.8 lens, for low light action shots. This is the second time I purchased this lens, the first was without IS - image stabilization.

To sum it up, this is the quality lens you would want for everday shooting. If you have something special in mind like low light photography, this has it's limitations.

This is THE go-to lens for anyone on ANY size sensor, 1.6x, 1.3 or full frame. Images are tack sharp and its MTF charts are bested only by lenses that cost several thousand dollars.

The stabilizer is good for 4 stops and works great for pans. I sue mine on a 60d and 5d, on the 60d it works out to a 120-320 f4 and gives me a little more reach, but on the 5D it's a fantastic portrait lens. The range is almost walkaround perfect and the lens feels great in your hands.

Backgrounds are butter wide open and the lens maintains its razor IQ from f4 to f32 should you need to go that high.

The only reason to go to the 2.8 is image stabilized, if you spend a lot of time at f8 and 11, this is your lens. Even the F4 isn't too bad in low-light and I can regularly hand-hold 1/40 sec. with the stabilizer and get sharp pictures

I bought the canon 70-200 L4 IS three weeks ago and was immediately impressed with the number of features available on this lens. Sure it is an expensive upgrade for what is almost certainly the same glass u this new generation dual mode IS is just stunning. Now I can use my 70-200 when before I had to put it away or get the tripod out and as we all know most of the time we tend to leave it at home or just plain forget to bring it out wiht us.

This lens is just simply superb and cannot see at this zoom range how it can be bettered. Colour, contrast, sharpness and lack of any of the common lens evils makes this a Canon top winner. Works great with the 1.4X extender too and with full AF and IS too on my EOS 40D. Woudl be interested to know if the 2x extender works with IS and/or AF with this lens.

So yes I have absolutely no regrets at the high cost of upgrading my old 70-200 non IS for this IS incarnation, it is now a fully useable lens and very much less OOF or camera shake pictures to bin.

Recent samples in my gallery for many of my photos taken since March this year.. Overall, I'd recommend the lens if you're on a budget.

Canon Zoom Telephoto EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM

Created: 25/03/10
I bought this lens about a week ago.

I really like the zoom range and sharp focus for moving objects. I photgraphy a lot of animal nature pictures and this camera has worked well so far. Another great plus is that it is relatively light. I also have the 24-105mm and 24-70mm L glass and they are more than double the weight.

I have a several Canon L series lens 6 in total currently and I would definitely recommend this lens.
