Best Home Printer Ever
Created: 03/11/10
Great print quality along with wireless functionality...all my computers (2 desktops and 1 laptop)easily use this same printer. Easy to install...follow simple instructions, inexpensive to use. Branded ink is only $13 a cartridge, even less for generic and with 5 separate ink tanks, you only replace the one that's empty. This printer does not use page counting to determine an out-of-ink condition; it uses light density for accurate low ink level indication. The duplexing function is great and the ADF (35 sheets) is a great feature. You'll never be disappointed with this printer.

I've been using this printer for over a month now, not every day, but several times a week at several pages each time. We havent quite used up the first full paper tray(it holds about 250 sheets), and my wife(a school teacher) has printed a lot on other miscelaneous sizes of paper as well.
Overall, the print quality is very good on plain paper, I havent yet done any photo printing on photo paper. The copy feature works fine, but it isn't the same quality as a dedicated copier - no surprise there, it is an inkjet after all. The machine has a lot of bells and whistles( many of which I haven't used yet), but the ones I have used all work as advertised. We all especially like the wireless aspect, initial set-up and connection went smoothly and took maybe 45 minutes to an hour for three computers, and the onscreen interface is pretty intuitive and easy to use, but unneccesary for most operations like copying, faxing and even some printing operations. I like the individual ink cartridges and havent noticed a particularly heavy ink use (havent had to replace any yet). It has a fairly large footprint, but it looks nice and because of the wireless aspect, it can go almost anywhere with an outlet.
On the downside, it is pretty slow to start printing - at least wirelessly, though I haven't tried it directly connected, so I don't know if there is a difference there. Once it gets going, it isn't noticeably slower than any other printer I've had (though they were all lower end machines), but definately slower than a pro grade model. It isn't particularly loud, but you certainly know its working - I don't do much secret printing anyway, and don't know anyone that does so I'm not sure why this would be much of an issue unless you keep it in the crib with your sleeping baby (and in that case you have other issues). One other complaint is that the paper tray seems a little flimsy - both its construction and in the way it inserts into the bottom of the machine - but it hasn't broken or been a problem, it just feels like it might be one day so maybe it isn't really a fair complaint, it just doesn't feel like the same higher quality as the rest of the unit.
I would recommeend this machine at this price point. It may be a little slow at first, but, like the tortoise, it makes it up in the long run.

This is a GREAT All-In-One printer!

Nice All-In-One! Prior to this, I had an Epson unit that was very noisy, had a paper feed that constantly grabbed more than one page at a time and used more ink than I have ever used before. During my first year with the Epson, it had to be replaced within the first 3 months of use. I won't even begin to discuss all of the aggravating experiences I had with the Lexmark units I have owned (all of them died just after the warranty ended)!
Since I have another Canon printer (Pixma IP-2600)that I use when traveling, I decided to give this one a try. That printer was a very inexpensive model that I purchased at a close-out store and it never gave me a problem. Purchasing the MX870 has proved to be a very wise decision.
Compared to my old Epson All-In-One, which cost over $100 more than this one, this unit is quite large and much heavier. This really isn't a big thing as it will not move from where it is set-up.
It is also very quiet and the print quality is just as good as any other printer I have owned. I also like that individual color cartridges are utilized. This will save a lot of money since you don't have to replace a single tri-color cartridge just because one of the colors run out.
The auto-paper feeder works like a charm! I have used this function several times and so far, it takes one page at a time. This is a great thing as I had to sit at the old Epson and separate each page to make sure it didn't grab 5 pages at a time.
I have to admit that I was a little intimidated when I first took it out of the box and saw all of the control/function buttons (this was an EBay purchase that was made without actually seeing a display model in a store). Despite the fact that it has more buttons than the average All-In-One, it is easy to use. I am sure that once I have a chance to read through the entire owners manual and discover more ways to use it, I will like it even better.
I highly recommend this unit!

Excellent Product

This product isn't too big and bulky, does everything and is easily set-up for wireless activity. The ink is relatively cheap and you only have to change one tank at a time rather than one big expensive one every time!!!! Would DEFINATELY reccommend this product to others looking for an ergonomic, quality product.

sharp, clear printing. A little slow to warm up, but once it gets going it's pretty fast. Everything seems to work the way it should. It's a good buy for the money.
I'm using the wireless feature and it seems to work as fast as hardwired.
Software installation was a no-brainer.
The only downside is the cost of replacement cartridges, but that's the way it is with any inkjet.
If you are considering buying this for home use, you'll be happy with it.
