Cars (Blu-ray Disc, 2007)

John Lasseter|Theatrical release: 2006 | Rating: G (MPAA)

Movie synopsis

IN THEATERS JUNE 9, 2006 John Lassater (TOY STORY, A BUG'S LIFE) brings his Pixar touch to a story of a charming but egomaniacal race car (the voice of Owen Wilson) who finds himself stranded in a small town, where he gets back in touch with his values., Talking cars rediscover the quirky originality of middle America in this inventive animated film from the folks at Pixar (TOY STORY, FINDING NEMO). Owen Wilson does the voice of arrogant rookie racecar Lightning McQueen, who winds up stranded in the small desert town of Radiator Springs on his way west to a big showdown. Sentenced to community service after literally tearing up the road in a high-speed chase, at first all Lightning can think of is getting back to the world of corporate sponsorship and merchandising tie-ins he loves so well. Eventually, however, the eccentric residents of Radiator Springs begin to grow on him, especially the attractive lady Porsche lawyer (Bonnie Hunt) and a rusty old tow-truck (Larry the Cable Guy). There's also a hippie Volkswagen (George Carlin), a low-riding T-bird (Cheech Martin) and Paul Newman as the gruff, curmudgeonly Doc Hudson, the town judge who harbors his own checkered-flag past. The story may not be new, but Pixar's precision-engineered animation brilliantly illuminates the town and its surrounding cactus-studded vistas down to the minutest detail, and director/writer John Lasseter keeps the film's satiric wit and generous heart in perfect alignment. Adults in the audience should appreciate the film's celebration of old-school American eccentricity, and the kids will dig all the thunderous grit and high-octane wheel burning. Randy Newman composed the score; James Taylor sings one of the songs.

Comparison of Cars Blu-ray and standard DVD

Created: 10/08/09
I recently purchased a Blu-ray player and the choice of the first movie to buy in this new format was obvious. "Cars" is my five-year-old son's favorite movie, and the DVD we had was scratched which caused the first few chapters to skip.

I previously had a Samsung 1080p upconverter DVD player (plugged into my 1080p HDTV set), and I thought the standard DVD edition of the movie was great. But when I saw the Blu-ray edition, I was really amazed.

The first scenes of the movie show the main character, Lightning McQueen, racing in the Piston Cup. On the Blu-ray edition, we could make out more of the small individual stickers on the race cars (which I was able to confirm by doing a side-by-side comparison against my upconverting DVD player). In addition, the individual headlights of the spectator cars in the stands were clear and distinct, as opposed to the DVD edition where these small details tend to blur together. Small details such as this show up much more clearly throughout the Blu-ray edition when compared to the standard DVD counterpart. These changes were evident enough that even my son was able to appreciate them.

The Blu-ray edition comes with a few additional extras compared to the standard DVD edition, but these are really not worth buying this edition by themselves -- an extra deleted scene and a game that can be played.

I'm told Blu-ray discs are more scratch resistant than standard DVDs, though we've only had this disc for a month so it's hard to tell yet how it will hold up. Since most of our other highly-played kid's discs end up scratched after a year or so, it will take some time to determine if this claim is true or not.

In short, if you're looking for a movie that will show off the excellent picture quality that Blu-ray can provide and that will entertain the family, "Cars" is definitely worth considering.

Greatest Blu-ray transfer to date? Look no further!

The HD version of Disney's Cars is absolutely flawless. I'm not usually big on animated movies, but after seeing this on a commercial on an hi def station, I took a chance and of course purchased from Ebay to save some money. I have to say that I saved my first animated blu-ray purchase for the right movie! If you watch the special features, you'll see the huge amount of detail that went into making the movie. Recruiting real nascar stars from on and off the track to use as consultants and even as voice talent.

I would greatly recommend this movie for racing fans, Disney fans, and those that just love a great looking hi-def picture to show off that new tv. This is the showcase film to do it!

CARS, the movie (animated) on Blu-Ray

Created: 16/05/08
This movie, Cars, is incredible quality picture in the Blu-Ray format, its life like. I do not know of any animated film I have seen yet that compares. The movie, is light hearted, with a message for us all on how to take a moment to slow down and appreciate ourselves, and others. I highly recommend it for adults and children. It is a great family film for us all.
I decided to buy this film after renting it when it first came to the movie rental store. After seeing it I thought what a great movie in std format, it must be incredible in Blu-ray and I was not disappointed. A+

One More Great Movie From Disney/Pixar Partnership

Created: 01/05/08
This movie is pure enjoyment from second one to the closing credits. Talking about the finest animation usually provided by Disney/Pixar partnership is redundant. The plot is convincing (except for the talking cars) as it approaches the modern life in detriment of slow-paced and honest small town America.

The movie also approaches the value of having true friends around you and shows that helping others in their most difficult moments gives a sense of self-fulfillment and that no money or glory can ever replace.

Entertainment guaranteed or your money back. Truly a family flick.
