How to Carve Folk Figures and a Cigar Store Inidian

This book had a good review of tool description and tool maintenance. The wood characteristics section was helpful as well.

The cigar store Indian was the best section, followed by the Indian head. I would have like to seen these chapters extended and continued in even greater detail. Pretty weak as a learning guide overall. Could have done w/o the folk figure section, as they were pretty cheesey pieces. I would never recommend paying anywhere close to full retail for this book.

This book was a big disappointment to me. When I buy carving books or guides I want clear photos, descriptions in detail and views of the carving from all sides etc. This is not worht spending more than a few dollars on it. If you can find it very cheap --ok but I still think it was a waste of money. The best photo is the one on the cover.

As a beginner, the hardest part is figuring out which item to make first. Lots to choose from. Hope to conquer all in 2 years time.
