Casualties of War (DVD, 2001)

Brian De Palma, Michael J. Fox, Sean Penn|Theatrical release: 1989 | Rating: R (MPAA)

Movie synopsis

After being denied the chance to go to a nearby village to visit a prostitute before starting a a reconnaissance mission, a tough, embittered American sergeant (Sean Penn) involves the four men of his patrol in the kidnapping of a young Vietnamese woman. The impending gang rape and murder of the woman splits the patrol into two factions, those for it, and those against it--with young Eriksson (Michael J. Fox) leading the dissension. But before long, the sergeant has convinced everyone but Eriksson to go along with the plan, making an already difficult mission unbearable for the morally conscious young soldier. Penn gives a powerful performance in this brutal, thoughtful war film from a script by playwright David Rabe (HURLYBURLY).

Casualties of War

A disquieting film based on a real incident of the Vietnam War (according to
Daniel Langs report in 1969 in The New Yorker), a soldier played by Michael
J Fox suffers a crisis of conscience when the men on his patrol kidnap, rape
and murder a Vietnamese girl and then try to cover up the crime. Brian De
Palma (Mission Impossible, The Untouchables, Scarface, etc) directs this film
and is uncompromising in his tale of brutality and the dehumanizing effects
of combat on men. Sean Penn co-stars as a vindictive squad leader, who initially comes up with the idea of the kidnapping-after suffering casualties
during the war and try to get "payback" for his losses. A good, but not
great film, it will fill a nights entertainment if you like war action or
Vietnam War movies as it has a realistic engagement between the patrol and
a Viet Cong force that is very good.

Casualties of War was so much better then I thought it would be. I bought it expecting an action, war movie, and was so glad to see that it was so much more.

Michael J. Fox and Sean Penn give the performance of the careers in this film, about what happens to average men and how they can change in time of War. Based on a true story of a private's quest for justice against his fellow soldiers for the rape and murder of a young girl, one of the very people they were sent to protect.

Love/hate, war is not an outing for a picnic by a bucolic lake. At least two outstanding actors starred in this movie. Based upon true incident(s) another story about war in a different scenerio. Some beautiful scenery, touching moments, horriffic battle/rape scenes. People were mistreated and people died. Every soldier a mother's son affected by the strange environment. A collector of war movies, I was touched with the ending. Closure.

I saw this movie when it first came out. I liked it so much that I wanted to watch it again. I was in my early 20's at the start of the Vietnam conflict. A lot of my friends didn't make it back. The story is so right on target as to the atrocities that occured on both sides, the VC and our guys. That was the worst war ever, in my opinion, and way too many of our guys died. Excellent movie and would recommend to anyone.
