Album Notes
The Moody Blues: Justin Hayward (vocals, guitar); John Lodge (vocals, bass); Ray Thomas (vocals, flute); Graeme Edge (drums).Engineers include: Bill Price, John Punter, Derek Varnals.Principally recorded live at the Royal Albert Hall, London, England on December 12, 1969.Digitally remastered by Steven Fallone.Personnel: Justin Hayward , John Lodge (vocals, guitar); Ray Thomas (vocals, flute); Michael Pinder (vocals, keyboards); Graeme Edge (drums).Recording information: Royal Albert Hall, London, England (05/19/1967-12/12/1969).Due to interpersonal strife, the Moody Blues called it quits between 1972's SEVENTH SOJOURN and 1978's OCTAVE. Presumably attempting to satiate hungry Moodies fans, Threshold released this vintage concert recording from a 1969 Royal Albert Hall show. The band was young and at the peak of its popularity, and they sound full of promise and ambition. Most of the songs come from their classic concept album DAYS OF FUTURE PASSED and its two successors. Having not yet settled into a more comfortable ballad mode, the group was at the peak of its psych/prog powers. Mike Pinder's Mellotron is unleashed in all its faux-string section glory on "Tuesday Afternoon" and the evergreen "Nights in White Satin," and Ray Thomas's pixie-like flute presence colors pretty ballads such as "Are you Sitting Comfortably?" The most impressive thing about CAUGHT LIVE is that the Moodies, whose reputation was made on their larger-than-life studio achievements, proved more than equal to the task of reproducing these achievements live. As a bonus, there are five tracks appended to CAUGHT LIVE, studio rarities from the same time period.

CAUGHT LIVE IS AN EARLY JEWEL OF MUSIC!

Created: 16/10/06
The Moody Blues, at first blush, would appear to be a band that would never be able to duplicate their lush, romantic, classical-rock music on a 'stage atmosphere.' This cd was recorded in 1969, but not released until 1976, before the 'Octave' cd. Their catalog consistented of Days of Future Passed, In Search of the Lost Chord, and On the Threshold of a Dream, To Our Children's Children's Children. Yet, astoundingly, the band made an effect statement 'live' with a huge theatrical soundtrack to to their best early material.

I recently listened to this cd again, and was struck by the great timelessness of this cd: it has an infectious bubbling enthusiasm by the band: still fresh and excited from doing major tours. As a normal part of the catalog, it would probably rate a 3.5 since most of the other material is already available, but as a live representation of the band: it stands as a great testament to an even greater notch in 70's rock music. "Caught Live+5" is the quintenessential LIVE cd for those who don't want distortion and heavy guitars dominating the live performance.

Moody Blues Caught Live +5 Completes Collection

For years, everyone wondered when The Moody Blues to come out with a live album encompassing their fantastic body of studio work; "Caught Live +5" does exactly that. The sound is very clear and the selection of songs is right on the money. An interesting thing about this album is the fact that the British crowd is very polite and well mannered in 1969 unlike a lot of live albums out back then and today. If there was one thing I would change on the album it would be to eleiminate the five studio songs added at the end. I would have much rather had more live music.

FOREVER LOST TILL NOW

BROUGHT THIS ALBUM WHEN IT CAME OUT BACK 30 YEARS AGO. PHOTOGRAPHS ARE HARD TO FIND .. BUT THIS CD WAS MUCH HARDER TO FIND. THE MOODY BLUES BROKE UP AFTER THEIR SEVENTH ALBUM. THEY DESTROYED THERE SONG FOR THE NEXT TWO ALBUMS. WHEN THEY REFORMED EARLY EIGHTIES THEY MADE THIS ALBUM WITH FIVE SONGS THAT THEY DESTROYED. A MUST FOR ALL MOODY BLUES FANS. BEEN A MOODY BLUES MUSIC LOVER OVER FORTY YEARS AND STILL GOING STRONG.

Fantastic group of songs! Very enjoyable to listen to. Personally, I like the 5 studio recordings, especially Justin's "Long Summer Days." This is a great CD to have.

As a recent convert to the wonderful Moody Blues, I did wonder about the comments regarding the band's ability to re-create their lush studio sound on stage. Having heard their Isle of Wight live album, I began to wonder, but 'Caught Live + 5' shows them at their brilliant best.

Whilst the latter album is a lot of fun, it was recorded at an open air festival, with an unfamiliar PA system, 'Caught Live + 5' captures the Moodies playing with their own sound system, road crew and the wonderful acoustics of the venue, the Royal Albert Hall in London. The instruments are clearly audible, the vocal harmonies are tight and the performances are, simply, spot on. Yes, the Moodies could and did do justice to their studio creations and, of course, Mike Pinder's mellotron fills the air with cosmic majesty.

The extra five studio tracks which close the album are all proof that a band of this quality could produce out-takes which were better than most bands' best.

A fine live album and yet more solid proof that the Moodies are due their rightful place in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
