The Cave (DVD, 2006, Widescreen Edition)

Bruce Hunt, Cole Hauser, Morris Chestnut|Theatrical release: 2005 | Rating: PG-13 (MPAA)

Movie synopsis

A sexy bunch of underwater explorers are summoned to Romania's Carpathian Mountains, where scientists have discovered a gigantic cave network containing a lengthy underground river. Cutting-edge breathing gear gets unpacked, camaraderie and budding romances develop, and then everyone becomes trapped in the depths, where monsters start picking off cast members, one by one. Escape depends on Jack, played by the dependably steely-eyed Cole Hauser (PAPARAZZI), who picked up a bad monster bite that may have infected his mind. Super-vixen Charlie (Piper Perabo) stands by him and displays a soothing screen presence as the tomboy rock climber in the crew, while Leana Headey plays the sexy Romanian biologist who fears that Jack is turning into a monster himself.Fans of B-movie monster movies should find this a nice cave to visit; there's no skimping on action or impressive set design, and each new cavern is weirder and more claustrophobic than the last. Staggeringly tall cliff faces, dark ominous waters, and a great, nerve-wracking orchestral soundtrack all add up to a fun horror adventure in the classic Saturday matinee sense. Of course, like all good monster movies, it borrows liberally from past classics: think of it as ANACONDA meets ALIEN by way of JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH, and if that doesn't sound like a fine way to spend a lazy Saturday afternoon, make sure you tread carefully as you exit THE CAVE!

The movie is set in Romania's Carpathian Mountains where a gigantic underground network of caves is discovered under the ruins of an ancient church. Before descending into The Cave scientists learn that the church was constructed to seal in evil demons that destroyed a group of medieval soldiers centuries before. After the "scientists" descend into the depths the monsters emerge and start killing the scientists, or so they think. Eventually the leader, played by Cole Hauser, has to lead the team from the depths. Hauser, however, has been bitten by one of the beasties and appears to be transforming into one of them. The remaining scientists must decide to follow him or go it alone.

The Cave is sort of a combination of "Aliens" and "Journey to the Center of the Earth". It doesn't measure up to either of those movies for a number of reasons. First, the acting leaves something to be desired. With the exception of Hauser, who was the best actor in the movie, the rest of the cast was unimpressive and forgettable. There was also virtually no character development and it was pretty apparent which characters would be dead by the end of the movie. The dialogue was just awful with the "scientists" exclaiming "wow" or "awesome" far too much. Also, the non digital monsters were silly and rubbery looking and were far from scary. The Cave doesn't lack in action but most of the scenes were predictable and with the poor character development you really don't care who the beasties get next.

What saved the movie were the nicely done sets and the underwater scenes, which were excellent. Most of these shots were put together really well and the digital backgrounds were very good. Also, the digital monsters were pretty good and were seamed well with the actors. It also didn't hurt that the movie started well with a good premise and ended well with an interesting conclusion.

The Cave is basically a modern day B - Movie. It has mostly no name actors, ok special effects, and a predictable plot. With that being said the movie does have a few twists, some nice underwater scenes, and more than enough action to keep most viewers entertained for its 98 minute running time.

THE CAVE

Created: 11/02/06
This movie features some of the best sets we've ever seen in a movie. The set design, the props, the colors, everything that is visual about this movie is incredible. This is the definition of cotton candy, right here. Brilliant images fill the screen from start to finish. And since not many movies are set underwater or within caves, many of the sets look exotic and otherworldly, which is all the more reason the visuals are so appealing. Unfortunately, for the aninal/monsters in the movie, is not displayed/shown enough, for us to get a picture in our head what they look like. Probably a cut-back on special effects.

The Cave" is a subpar action-horror with a bunch of slimy, fanged monsters stalking and/or eating a group of young, attractive explorers. It features pretty much all of the cliches you'd expect from an action-horror and doesn't really try to break the mold. This wouldn't be a problem, necessarily, if the script and acting and direction were at least done well. Unfortunately, they aren't.

There are only two good actors in the whole movie: Cole Hauser and Daniel Dae Kim. The latter is on screen for about ten minutes, total, and for six of those minutes he just runs around screaming. Not a great opportunity to show off talent. Hauser does a decent job, but the character he has to play is ludicrous and his lines are laughable, so you don't really notice his performance half the time.

The screenplay is aggravating. We are told, in the beginning of the movie, that these characters are professionals and scientists, but they speak like losers. For example, when they first go into The Cave, Blonde Girl screams, "Totally awesome!" While this is certainly the sentiment that comes to mind when seeing the set, you might think that a scientist would be able to say something a bit more intelligent. Unfortunately, the dialogue stays around that same level of sophistication throughout.

Dr. Hot Chick explains that they are dealing with a species that evolved in total isolation. Uh, okay, don't know how she surmised all of that from exactly ten seconds of observing a claw, but then why would the monster be a parasite? Isn't it a little bit contradictory for a parasite to live in an environment where there isn't much life to leech off of?

And if the animals are predators, then why are they also parasites? Shouldn't they just be eating the humans instead of infecting them and transforming them? Do the monsters act like vampires and get to choose who transforms and who just turns into food? And if they don't, then how have the monsters lived for so long in The Cave? After a bazillion years in isolation, shouldn't everything be infected, and consequently they would've died from starvation? Or are they cannibals?

If you liked 'Core', "Deep Sea Blue', then this is the film you would want to add in your dvd collection. Unlike for some people, who have given negative reviews on this film, we find this movie very entertaining, and satisfying to this thirsty sci-horror movie.

This is a hell of a good movie! I really enjoyed it for a low budget movie it was really good. Go out and rent it not a waste of money.

Story Line:
A group of cave-divers and scientists explore a newly found cave system in Romania. However, rockfall blocks the exit and after delving further into the cave, the group discover a pack of deadly creatures are waiting for them. With their leader Jack (Cole Hauser) having very strange side-effects and with their numbers dropping, the group must delve even further into the cave, battle the creatures and hope for an exit.

It was like watching it in a CAVE

The concept of this movie is good but the lightening is horrible. I understand it was shot in a cave and light is not one of the many things you will find there, but the movie is so dark that at times you can't see what is going on and all you hear are screams and little flashes of things. Overall its a good movie but not one I would spend more than a dollar or two on.

The movie had me on the edge of me seat wondering what will happen next and of course with the monsters popping up and out of no where it caused me and my heart to jump back. The under water and cave scenes are beautiful. It is an action packed and mystery movie. I enjoyed watching and have watched it many times.
