Very good scope for the price

Created: 07/04/10
Other than it being a Bird Jones type scope it's really a good buy for the price.
The dislikes:the finderscope is on the cheap side, shaky tripod, the 4mm eyepiece & 3X barlow are worthless.
Likes: price,portable,20mm eyepiece,clear optics.
With some practice with the EQ setup for tracking planets, eyepiece upgrades and a different finderscope this scope is a great buy.

This telescope is only satisfactory as a starter telescope, and then, only if you have patience and time. The dilemma is clear: not knowing how interested you or your family will be in using and enjoying a telescope until you try it, one is reluctant to spend the considerable amount of money that is required to purchase a high quality instrument. Any less expensive equipment (under $300-400) is going to be a compromise of some sort. In the case of the Celestron 127, the compromise is in it's clarity of focus and quality of tracking and adjustment mechanisms. They all work, but are clearly inexpensively manufactured. It was said in the reviews I read before this purchase that better optical eyepieces, which can be purchased readily, would be desired. However, the dilemma rules again; should I take the chance on spending more money without the guarantee that the better quality eyepieces will satisfactorily correct the deficiencies? I will be doing more research on this before deciding.

Unbelievable! The most scope for the price BY FAR!!

OK, so I admit I'm a complete novice (or very nearly so) at astronomy, so maybe I don't have enough experience to make such a categorical statement, but honestly, after the frustration of trying to find & track planets & such using the cheap refractors I bought a couple times, this scope offers a quantum leap in usefulness, ease of operation and (most importantly) IMAGE QUALITY. The price was surprising to me, as I had thought nothing anywhere NEAR this quality could be found for <$350-400.
