Album Notes
Sepultura: Max Cavalera (vocals, acoustic guitar); Andreas Kisser (acoustic & electric guitars); Paulo Jr. (bass, percussion); Igor Cavalera (drums, percussion).Recorded at Rockfield Studios and Cheepstow Castle, South Wales.Sepultura truly claimed its place on the heavy-metal world stage with 1993's CHAOS A.D., a focused, dose-of-thunder release that crystallized the Brazilian outfit's aesthetic. Propulsive rhythms, gravel-voice shouting, and epic guitar riffs drenched in nerve-fraying distortion come together in a perfect marriage here. But while Sepultura's music was originally inspired by the likes of Metallica and Slayer, CHAOS A.D. feels considerably more stripped-down than the music of these mentors--progressive changes and long, showy solos are few and far between.Instead, Sepultura emphasizes fierce, straightforward structures that have more in common with hardcore's no-nonsense approach than metal's glamorous flash. The band's lyrics take a distinctly political turn on CHAOS A.D., addressing issues such as state-generated war ("Refuse/Resist") and biotechnology ("Biotech Is Godzilla"--with lyrics written by Jello Biafra). The weightiness of the themes is well suited to the crushing, apocalyptic sound of the quartet (Igor Cavalera's drumming alone could bulldoze a medium-sized city), and the intensity of the performances throughout should appeal to fans of both traditional and hardcore metal. This is an essential album from one of the most important aggressive rock bands of the 1990s.

Editorial Reviews
(6) - Good - ...CHAOS AD may be the term for the boiling point rage against state corruption and persecution, but [Sepultura] leave the sickening negativity and chronic egoism to others...
NME

...[CHAOS A.D. is a] genuine expression of outrage...Sepultura are not in the business of splatter soundtracks or documentary gore-fests--they write protest songs...
Melody Maker (19931023)

3 Stars - Good - ...[CHAOS A.D.] should mark a milestone in [Sepultura's] career...they've succeeded in capturing their live aggression with a resonance and immediacy that evaded earlier efforts...
Q (19931201)

...Sepultura will separate casual headbangers from rabid addicts fast....even nonmetalheads will be impressed by the variety in [CHAOS A.D.]: they're not averse to slowing things down... - Rating: B+

My first love!

Created: 02/03/08
This was the first Sepultura album I fell in love with. From the opening percussion salvo on "Refuse/Resist" it is impossible not to unleash that energy lying dormant inside you. "Slave New World", and "Propaganda" are battle cries for the age we live in. The instrumental Kiowa retains intensity melded with beauty. Their cover of New Model Army's "The Hunt" is excellent. And if you let it spin past the final track you will be both disturbed and amused to hear the recording of maniacal laughter that I assume was added in later. Enjoy.

Before they got too big, they was still great

Chaos A.D. rocks from beginning to end. Before Roots they had a great talent from Max,Igor and the rest of the best brazilian metal band ever.Early Sepultura is interesting.Their lyrics has a raw political cutting edge that slits your throat while you're listening to them.As the drum beat hits on the side of your head. This was before Roots,Soulfly or the new Sepultura. When the metal getting grunged out of the airwaves and got more militant.Sepultura rightly takes their place along side with Slayer,Kreator,Pantera,Lamb of God and etc. in the True Metal Gods hall of Fame.

Another excellent offering of Brazillian thrash!

Created: 11/06/09
this album is another great purchase from the Sepultura maelstrom. instead of whipping by, devouring everything in it's scorched path a la 'beneath the remains' and 'arise', sepultura actually took time to 'take prisoners' on this album. but only to torture them later. don't be deceived, this is another punishing album from Sep, and it boasts their best production to date, in my opinion. this album does 'annihilate' like the arise-and-earlier-era albums, it just takes the time to take solice in your pain as it keeps kicking you in your face....over and over again. 4.25 out of 5. excellent thrash, buy it.

The most complete album by Sepultura

Musicianship on top form here. Excellent songs, no filler here, all winners. On this album Sepultura went down but with an interesting brutality at the same time. Can't go wrong with this!!
