Bonner except "Cheater" (W. Armon) and "You Gotta Be" (Des'ree/A. Ingram).Pliers' younger brother steps up for his debut album, and delivers a set compiling recent hits amongst a few new tracks. The majority were cut with the Taxi crew, with others coming courtesy of Lynford "Fatta" Marshall and Colin "Bulby" York, Xterminator's Fattis, and Bobby Digital. There's no doubt then, that this is one fabulous sounding album, glossy, without ever falling into slickness, and boasting a clutch of fabulous rhythms. Spanner Banner has a voice as sweet as his brother's, and you can even compare the two on "Slow Motion," a real charmer of a duet, with Pliers' partner Chaka Demus good naturedly roughing up the edges. The swinging exuberance of "Universal Love" pairs the singer with DJ Tony Rebel with equally exemplary results, while Luciano adds his rich vocals to "What We Need Is Love." Elsewhere, the solo Banner is accompanied by a quartet of backing vocalists including Brian and Tony Gold. This is, of course, the lighter side of dancehall, where affairs of the heart are the only concern, and love is the solution to all the world's problems. It could be cloying, but Banner has a winsome quality that saves even the most saccharine songs from disintegrating into treacle. Every track sounds heartfelt, from the promises of devotion to the anguish of lost love. The singer certainly has talent, it will be interesting to see if he eventually tackles songs with some meat on them. In the meantime, start with this delicious dessert. ~ Jo-Ann Greene
